I stumbled across these bands while searching for some new Black Metal to listen to back when I was first getting into the genre. When I listened to this split, I was surprised at the sound quality of the songs. Considering both bands are pretty underground, and most likely had low production value, the low production was noticeable when comparing them to a band like Immortal, but it wasn’t bad and the sound quality was still decent. I was glad to hear this because low production value can ruin an album, especially in Black Metal.

The first band on the split is a Melodic Black Metal band called Darkmoon Rising. Like typical Black metal, the guitars use of tremolo picking is very prominent, even in the songs main melodies, which is always harmonized by a second guitar. The melodies in this band’s songs were very impressive because instead of only harmonizing, the guitars also play separate riffs, in sync. I thought this really added to the chaotic atmosphere all black metal should have and the band pulled it off nicely. Along with the chaotic atmosphere was the singer, who had good shrieks, and even had clean vocals, which reflected even more upon their melodic style. The melodic part was really noticeable during the bridges, which sounded like old In Flames bridges. Bass is a little lacking, but it is still prominent in small, subtle parts of the songs. As far as the drums go, there were many fast blast beats and double bass going, although typical of black metal, I cant say it was boring because black metal is some of the hardest and fastest drumming in music, and the drummer Ilian Velevis very good. It’s too bad he isn’t in the band anymore.

The second band on the split is a symphonic metal band called Primitive Angel Gospoden. The band makes good use of symphonic elements, which gives it a beautiful, yet evil atmosphere that most Symphonic Black Metal bands have. As much as I could make out, (and I also found some lyrics on the internet) both bands lyrics revolve around darkness. The singer, much like the other band’s singer has good shrieking, which is hard to find in underground bands. The guitars use a lot of dark, slow riffs even though the tremolo picking used is fast. The sometimes “Doom” feel this band gives off is all thanks to the drummer, who either uses extremely fast blast beats, or extremely fast double bass, with slow snare hits. The other great thing about the drummer is that most of the time, he uses extremely complex ride cymbal and double bass patterns really quickly, that kept me trying to think about how he just did that.

Over all, a good release and a great split. A refreshing album that possesses Melodic and Symphonic elements that goes great in Black Metal. Both bands have good song structures that are not traditional, and really show both bands musicianship. As for Darkmoon Rising, I hope they find a new drummer and start working on some new material again. Although very rare, I would recommend buying it, or if you can’t find it, try finding free mp3 downloads, or listenings on Last.fm if your looking for some great underground Black Metal.
