Advent Sorrow is a symphonic black metal band from almighty Australia who formed in 2010, and they've released their first EP in mid
2012. I saw this EP on a site that I go to and I saw that it was from Australia (knowing that they are known are for their amazing birth of deathcore, and I'm starting to get into the black metal scene now that I've listened to the amazing
Cradle Of Filth).
And the thing that caught my attention is that they were called symphonic by the site I saw them on.
And I'm a big fan of symphonic qualities, as long as it's not overused. Like on some
Winds of Plagues songs, they have sometimes overused their symphonic war choir music in The Great
Stone War. I'm not saying I don't like that kind of stuff, but I'm saying that sometimes I get annoyed by it because it's what they use all the time. But every now and then we all get that way but we always end up falling back in love with it.
The difference between the amount of symphonics that are in
Advent Sorrow and
Winds of Plague is obvious, but what I love most about
Advent Sorrow's use of it, is that they use it at the right time. Like in the beginning of
Before the Dimming Light, it gives a haunting, chilling feel.
And they keep the same mood by using these little interludes throughout the song.
And that's what caught my attention about these guys; is that they know when to use it and how to use it the right way. Along with the mix of some bass drops in those intense moments, which is pretty impressive considering that it isn't deathcore (obviously...) But my point is, they seem to know what their doing and don't fool around with their music.
With the actual music, there is nothing I would change about it. The music fits with the overall haunting feeling and the vocalist seems to throw in some lows in there which is pretty sexy.
And knowing that these guys are from Australia, makes me wonder what other kind of music is there for me to discover. Australia is known for their music, especially from what I've heard from them so far, which is amazing. But for this EP by
Advent Sorrow I'd give it a 18/20. This has definitely changed my perspective on black metal by miles.
And I'm quite thankful that that has changed.
I've had to edit a little bit in the opening paragraph because it contained too many errors (nothing major, just some expressions)
For a first review, you have done well. You picked on an element and described it very nicely, well done.
However, one suggestion that I may think of is try and think of other things to write about rather than just picking on the one element. You you've talked about their symphonic elements and touched slightly on the vocals and atmosphere. But what about:
- song structure
- repetitvity
- production quality
- guitar riffs/drumming
And just anything that you think holds a bearing on the overall quality of the music ;)
Anyway, I think this was a pretty good review (considering it's your first) and you have heaps of potential.
Thanks
