Gypsyhawk has released their new album, Revelry and Resilience, on August 24th. The release party happened at Vinyl Records, a record store in Hollywood. SOM had a chat with the bass guitar player and lead singer, Eric Harris, about the new album, the band’s plans for the future and more. Check it out!!

interview GypsyhawkToday is the official release of “Revelry and Resilience”. What have you guys planed for the concert tonight?
We are going to be playing 6 songs of our new album (that just came out) and then we are just going to try to get everybody to check out “Grill’em all” [the food truck parked just outside the record store where the band was playing that night]. They make the best burgers you’ll ever have. And then we are all going to go to a bar and just try to get everybody “fucked up” and have a good time.

This release party is happening inside a record store called “Vacation Vinyl”. Why this record store? Do you guys come here often?
No… I just know about this place for a long time. I’ve known about Pete [Majors] and that he has done in-store [record release] for bands before and I thought it was cool. I thought that it would be way more fitting for us to do a release in a record store as opposed to like, some venue. Because if we did it in a venue there would be like, 4 people that would show up, you know? LA is a really hard place to get people to come out.

So, doing it in a record store, the fact that the album is only available at the record store for the next 4 days and the fact that we have Grill’em all here; it is like, a quiet, little, nice, intimate party with everybody.

About this new release: how would you describe it to the readers?
We recorded it in February. We did it in like, 6 days…. 11 songs. So, there is tons of layering and other “shit” in it. So, we are super stoked to put it out and have it done. There is nothing too deep on the album… I don’t know. It is just us, fucking playing what we like and having a good time.

Not trying to put any labels on it, but would you describe it to be more rock n’roll, more metal or something in between?
We always think it is rock n’ roll but we seem to get lumped in, from a lot of people, to be like, a metal band. I think it is just because we have lots of amps and the guitars are distorted. People are just: “This is fucking heavy metal”. But I would say: don’t always jump into conclusions about “shit”.

I like metal [but] I don’t like a lot of current metal, today. I don’t know, we are just playing “shit” that we always wanted to play and wanted to hear. So, it is cool to put this album out, specially with Metal Blade.

Talking about you signing with Metal Blade. How different it is for you guys now, when comparing to the time you released your previous album?
The previous release, it was our friend who was putting the album [out] for us, which was cool. We got to put the physical copy out and to get our name out there a little bit because we toured for it.

But with Metal Blade… this is like having a fucking brand new suit of amours. They’ve got connections that we only have hoped to have had. It’s cool… I couldn’t have asked for a better deal.

S
interview Gypsyhawko, do you think that the “reality” of the band is going to change now?
No, not at all. Because we are still the same fucking scumbag, shit heads, we’ve always been. We have no “pie in the sky” dreams about like: “Oh, we’ve got a fucking label now, [girls] are going to suck our dicks, and we can play wherever we want”. It is not like that at all.

We’re all still broke, we are all still touring in a van and we are also playing music that we want to hear only because, that’s what drives us. Not because we are like “What can we do, what kind of break downs can we throw in to like… hook people [up]?” We don’t give a shit. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to like it, nobody is asking, you know? So, this is kind of how we feel… it’s whatever.

Your lyrics are pretty much based on fantasy or science and you are from Pasadena. Are you guys the Big bang Theory “Bizarro World” version?
(laughs) No… I mean, nerds have always been like, metal “shit” to me. You listen to Dio and he is talking about spells and charms, dragons… There’s where I feel the “spirit of metal” really derived from: it is the whole fantasy, imagery, distant lands and giant beasts… just brutal. These are the only things I am interested in writing about anyways, fantasy stories and made up “shit”.

What about your science interest?
Andrew and I, in particular, have deep interest in quantum physics or just physics, latest advancements and science mathematics in general. Just because, in a world where you don’t know what’s real, what really counts for “shit”, instead of believing in religion or some made up philosophy, you might just believe on something that can be proven to you through the use of mathematics, numbers and formulas.

The recent discoveries in quantum physics have been mind blowing because if you really get into the bottom line of what they are saying… it is like… we don’t really know if anything is real. There are always questions that are still let unanswered. And I feel like humans, in the most part, are such fucking dumb assholes because we always want to pretend like: “we have the answers and we are important”. But, in the grand scheme of things we might not be important. We might just be a fucking accident. So, just live what you can and don’t make that big of a deal out of it. Just be cool to everybody and…. Don’t start wars (laughs).

Do you keep up with science news?
No. I guess I should have said that. Andrew and I are not like avid researchers, we don’t go read and like: “Oh… according to this formula we have proven this theorem” [doing a really funny voice]. We don’t know that “shit”, we just read news headlines or anything in the press. It is just cool to hear what they are saying, how they are putting it to the public.

I think that a lot of people are just like: “I don’t give a shit about what a bunch of scientist are saying”. I do! They know what’s going on and you don’t so…

interview Gypsyhawksize="3" color="#CCCCCC">You mentioned that you appreciate metal and you guys do have a background in metal don’t you?
Yeah. I like metal bands and metal albums that have been put out before. A lot of my interests lie like, on the 80’s and before. The 90’s have some cool “shit” but I feel like constant progression of metal has become a very corporate image; it is accessible to everyone now.

You look into pop culture and mainstream media, there are metal references everywhere. It is cool to be into metal. Metal it’s this fucking “hip” thing now. It just seems silly to me that it is always pretending to be like: “we are for the underdog; we are for the little guy”. But, that is not the case. It is like anything that has been happening in America, it has been corporatize. It is just like, they are always going to say that they allude to the roots of everything but they’ve clearly forgotten about them, a long time ago. I think that that’s why we are doing the things we are doing.

We are not trying to rally some fucking philosophy like “keep metal pure”. I don’t give a shit about anything. We are metal fans; we all like all kinds of metal (black metal, thrash metal, death metal). So, there is a bunch of shit we listen to but today I’m just really not into it.

Anytime you see the name “Gypsyhawk”, there is the word “party” somehow linked to it. If a fan would like to party with you guys after a concert and wants to offer you a drink: what would you like to get?
Drinks? Whiskey.

So, if the fans want to bring you a treat, a bottle of whiskey would be a good one?
Oh yeah! That would be great.

What about studio time? Does the party level continue the same during that? Or do you keep it on a minimum?
We actually, as much fucked up as we appear to be, when it comes to being professional in the business, we really take care of business when we absolutely have to.

When we were on the studio, only one of us ended up getting hammered twice out of six days. That’s fucking phenomenal because we normally, seven out of six days, we would’ve been fucked up.

We definitely handle business and we want this to get places so we have the dedication and drive to do it. But we just don’t have the overly serious attitude that I think a lot of people do about things.

Are you guys planning any concerts outside of the country?
No, Gypsyhawk hasn’t been outside of the country. I cannot wait for Gypsyhawk to go outside the country. Because, every time I’ve been [outside of the country] it has been with a metal band and it has been these metal fests and “shit”. So, I’m sick of seeing the metal scene, I want to see how Europeans respond to American rock n’roll. That is one of the exciting things for me and for us, getting to play anywhere else.

Any message to the SOM readers?
Yeah, totally. Fucking, be cool. Everybody love everybody (laughs)!
