Biography : Unexpect

Hailing from Montreal (Canada), Unexpect is a metal laboratory mixing elements of black/death/symphonic/melodic metal; progressive, classical, electro, folk, jazz, operatic, mathcore, ambient, noise, circus music and anything else crossing their minds. The collective includes a violin, keyboards/sampling, a singing contemporary dancer, a 9 stringed bass, 2 guitarists/singers and a drum. The vocal performance of the two singers range from an extreme to the other as they alternate between glorious choirs; inhuman screams of deep, high, mid-growl and delirious intensity; theatrical narrations; and clean/sober sections strewn with a female singer who’s angelic voice could melt the will of the most vile politician.

The ideas traveling in their lyrics are related to the imagination and the inherent creative power of all human beings, subjective tales, trancelike sensorial exploration, undercover denunciation of social aspects and subconscious realities. Think Cirque du Soleil goes metal amidst an acid-trip version of The Dark Crystal.

Strong from more than 250 shows all over the world with lots of international bands, they constitute a massive rising force in the actual music scene, standing alone in an original and very personal musical style. Highly respected for their musical talent and incredible live performances, this creative and unique act is now attracting more attention than ever with the release of their anticipated new album Fables of the Sleepless Empire (2011). Their critically acclaimed album In a Flesh Aquarium (2006) received distinguished honours and has been incensed by the press, depicted as “a twisted work of sheer, breathtaking genius”. It has been acclaimed nearly unanimously by the critics as a milestone in contemporary metal. A perfect follow-up to their first full length Utopia (1999) and their breakthrough mini cd: _we, Invaders (2003). They’ve even been congratulated and incensed by famous Dream Theater’s drummer Mike Portnoy who declared publicly: ”WOW… I am speechless!!! I just got turned onto this INSANE band from Canada called UNEXPECT. Absolutely some of the most OUT THERE, progressive, technical, avant-garde music I’ve ever heard!”. Following that statement, Unexpect has been personally invited on the PROGRESSIVE NATION TOUR 2009 covering the whole European Territory with DREAM THEATER, OPETH & BIGELF.
