Biography : Schmetterlinck

11th July 2008, Schmetterlinck was found. With our first line-up the first rehearsal took place in Ooigem. This first line-up would not last very long. Bass player Tim and rhythm guitar player Danny left due to a lack of time. For a few months, Schmetterlinck had only three band members: Founder and lead guitar player Niels Desmedt, Thomas Dejaeghere on drums and Mathias Wenes on vocals.

In February a rhythm guitar player was found in the person of Bart Maes, who is today still in the band. With that line-up a first demo “1302” was recorded in our rehearsal room, with the help of Piet Martens, who was still learning the job of recording. “1302” contained the songs Terugkeer Van De Vlaamse Leeuw, Godverdomse Zatlap and 1302. As we did not had a bass player at that time, the bass was played by Davy Bonny, a friend of our Rhythm Guitar player.

On 9th May 2009 we had our very first gig in JC Den Ast, a pub in Heule. After a year with a few gigs and two different bass players our line-up has finally been completed by a bass player who would stay longer in the band than two months. His name was Bram Villez. With Bram on bass we went to the Joriz DC Studio in Zelzate to record our second demo “De Bende Van De Bokkenrijders”.

Schmetterlinck plays Epic Folk Metal with some influences from Black Metal, Thrash/Speed Metal and Power/Heavy Metal. We do not use any folk instruments our keyboards, because we are able to create the right atmosphere with the normal Metalcombo only. We sing about history, beer and fantasy books that are not written by Tolkien.

All our songs are sung in Dutch and some are even sung in West-Flemmish, our local dialect. The bandname Schmetterlinck is the result of Niels’ love for the German language and its pretty cool words. The German word for butterfly, one of the most lovely creatures in the world, is Schmetterling. Niels liked this evil sounding word so much, that he decided to pick it as bandname. The “g” at the end has been replaced by “ck” because it sounds more Flemmish.
