Biography : Scatha (UK)

After the demise of Sedition in 1993 and Disaffect in late '94, Andy and Iain "IB" Blue started writing some new tunes with a view to playing a slower, heavier style. Angus (ex-Sedition) was asked if he'd be interested in handling vocals, Billy (ex-Sedition and Disaffect) was asked to play second guitar, and Jason (ex-Stretchheads) was approached to handle drumming duties. Eventually, Scatha was born.

Much rehearsing culminated in a two-week tour of Europe with Quarantine. After the success of the tour, the 'Respect, Protect, Reconnect' LP was recorded on Flat Earth Records.

The seminal 'Fuck the System' EP was recorded. Andy put the EP out in early 1997 and it did surprisingly well.

With the vinyl releases having sold well, another two-week tour of Europe, this time with Viking legends Counterblast proved to be overwhelmingly successful and left us on a high, so we decided to book studio time to record a second LP 'Birth, Life & Death', again on Flat Earth Records.

Things hit a bit of a lull for various reasons. Andy had left the band and moved to Bradford in 1997, with Johnny (Debris) swiftly replacing him, then Billy left in '98 leaving us with only one guitarist for some time, we didn't play many gigs over the next year or so and new songs were in short supply.

Johnny & Iain "IB" Blue both left to concentrate on Debris, their other band; Andy, although still in Bradford, offered to rejoin. So, down to three of the original members, Angus, Andy & Jason decided to set about finding replacements. Brian (ex-Disaffect), although himself still playing in Debris, was asked to join on second guitar. Gordon (ex-Bonejack) was recruited on bass, and a steady line-up was eventually re-established.

We embarked on our first European tour in almost five years, playing with Belgium's own Catastrophobia, which went well, and helped strengthen the new line-up of the band.

We finally started writing some new material and early in the year we recorded three new tracks, one of which was used for a split 7" with Ireland's The Dagda, a split release on Panoptic Vision, Crime Scene & Anonymous Records.

With Angus living in the far North of Scotland, Andy living in the North of England and the others living in Glasgow, plus individual members work and family ties, it was becoming increasingly difficult to organise rehearsal times and places that suited everyone. But, although we decided it was the end of the road for Scatha, it seemed only appropriate to do some gigs with The Dagda before we called it quits. So, April that year saw us playing our last three gigs, in Scotland. They went extremely well, and helped to end it all on a gloriously happy note, so cheers to those who took part and those who partook, respect.
