As the new moon rises
When the night fell dark once in late summer of 2009, an idea secretly sneaked into the mind of
Lars Tornberg, full-blooded musician since his early days. Already having participated in lots of
different music projects, it now seemed to be just the right time to found his very own band – and to create something that would move the people, something that would guide them to meet their
innermost self. That was the moment when „Saphenous“ was born.
What started out as a female fronted gothic rock project, characterized by rather soft tunes with a majority of German lyrics, soon began to change its shape. Caught in the tides of time which helped the music to evolve and to unfold, the sound of the seven-headed band slowly merged with other musical influences, covering the different backgrounds of every band member. By reconciling different genres as thrash, folk, death, power and classical music, the „rock sound“ had to give way to a more „metallic“ style, which now leads the band to call its genre melodic metal. Some might even find similarities to the early work of bands like Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica or Edenbridge, but it is and always will be paired with Saphenous' very own unique signature which makes every song special and every gig a memorable experience that shouldn't be missed.
After proving their skills and qualities on several gigs scattered over the cities of North Rhine
Westphalia, only during the time when the band finally seemed to have found its way and started to spread its wings, Saphenous had to deal with its first notable setback when several band members, including former front woman Carina, decided to part ways due to personal reasons. After everything culminating in April 2014 when the band played its farewell-gig as the support for Heavy Metal veteran „Layment“, it took more than two years of struggle before the line-up could be re-completed. Now fronted by beautiful soprano Sally, the band continued to work hard and finally, against all odds, rose from the ashes in the year of 2018, which should become a very special year for the old and new members of Saphenous.
Already during the months of spring the first fellow musicians hit the road towards the lonely Eifel
montains where they were about to start recording the band's first EP. Still being nameless at that
point in time, the band later decided to call it „Phoenix“ as most of its material arose from the
experiences, the struggles and the efforts that the band had gone through during these past years. Inthe end the EP is meant as a sign for everyone who is struggling for any reason, at any point in their life – its aim is to remind us that it is only these experiences that teach us to endure, to fight against the darkness, to grow stronger so that we can finally overcome all the obstacles standing in our way.
When the production was finished, Saphenous celebrated the release of „Phoenix“ at the end of
October with a great gig in their hometown Hagen together with local Power Metal legend „Solar
Fragment“. This special night will always stay in the band's memory not only because it finalizes
the first big milestone in its still young career, but rather because it marks the point where old
burdens have finally been left behind – the point where the real journey is only about to begin. As a part of this journey, Saphenous will tirelessly continue to work on its goal to unveil what lies concealed and to pave the way through the mystical mists of life. Feel free to dive into the hidden
