The British death metal band Mithras was formed in 1998 under the original name Imperator. As the Polish band named Imperator reunited they changed their name to Mithras and released a self-financed mini album called "Gods Among Men" in September of 1999, limited to 200 copies. In June 2000 they performed live for the first time at the Birmingham Foundry venue. Some line-up changes followed before they signed a deal with the Scottish label Golden Lake Productions. In January 2004 they signed a new deal with Candlelight Records.
