Free Weed is a five-member metal/thrash metal band from Prophetstown (Illinois, the Midwest of the USA - the Quad Cities area - northwest Illinos to be geographically precise).

Members include : Mike Moody (singer), VJ Dixon and Matt Moody (guitars), Jenny Dixon (bass) and John Baker (drummer). Our original songs are fast and driving, with the focus on energy and with killer leads too. That seems to be the thing that's lacking in a lot of new metal these days. We all grew up with the same sense of old-school values, listening to shit like Metallica, Megadeth, Mercyful Fate, Zoetrope, Anthrax, Slayer, Pantera, Testament, Metal Church, Exous, Suicidal Tendencies (the list could go on and on, but you get the idea).

Most of us started out jamming with friends in the late 80s and early 90s. Mike and Matt (yeah, they're brothers) were in a band called Psychotherapy, an original metal band. Mike was the singer, Matt played lead guitar. They played a lot of parties and local bars, cut their teeth having a lot of fun and partying. VJ, same story, started out playing guitar in a band called Permanent Damnage, a heavy thrash metal band, then bass in Expulsion, a thrash/cruise metal band. Jenny's the newbie. She started playing bass in 2000, she came to practice one night with a rented bass and amp and said "I'm gonna be your new bass player" (obviously we were looking for a new bass player at the time). And yeah, VJ and Jenny are married. From that point it's been amazing. Last, but not least, John, the double-kick god, he comes, from many bands - Waco Jesus, Suckerpunch, Stinkfinger to name a few. This guy is easily one of the best drummers we've played with.

We all have many things in common, with the most obvious being that we love metal. We love getting together with friend, having some beers, partying, jamming loud, really loud ! Nobody in the band is truly looking to get rich and famous (but that'd be cool). We do feel our music jams and needs to be spread around to the masses!

If you haven't guessed it yet, Free Weed doesn't have much to do with pot, really. I mean, we all like partying from time to time, but we aren't out promoting the illegal use of drugs. OK, now that the disclaimer is out of the way, our name gets your attention, doesn't it ?! The most common responses we get from people is either a big smile, or a "what ??", usually depending on the age of the asker ! It's great to see Free Weed plastered up on a marquee in front of a club !

We've currently completed a six song EP, and are really looking forward to sharing it with the metal head out there! We intend to continue to perform gigs wherever there are people in need of Free Weed! We also plan on getting back into the studio soon.
