Biography : Cales

CALES is a pagan-epic-darkmetal project of a musician, multi-instrumentalist and a producer, known as Blackosh or Blackie.

Blackosh is one the most talented guitarists and composers of metal music in the Czech Republic. Blackosh devoted most of his musical career to a legendary black metal band ROOT (1987-2004). The most prominent of his side projects is by all means CALES, remaining his top recording activity until today.
CALES was founded as early as 1992. The project comes to being based on the split-up old school black metal effort entitled CRUX, where the guys were following the path of SODOM, SLAYER, CELTIC FROST & DESTRUCTION. The demo called "Řev Smrti" ("Scream of Death"), recorded by Crux in 1991, was re-released on a CD by the Swedish label I Hate Records in 2006. A year later (1992), CALES recorded a remake of a two-part song from the CRUX tracklist, originally entitled "The First Key", CALES giving it the name "The Last Key", under which title the song appears on the "Necrometal" compilation.
Debut CD "Bonds Of Togetherness", although recorded in 1995 by DeSed - vocals, Blackosh - guitars, bass, vocals, Evil - drums, came out only in January 1997 at a small label Tentamen Records. Later on, in 2004, the re-release of the albums appears at Open Media. The re-released CD includes a promo video for the bonus song "Through the Years". Even on this very first album a major diversion from Blackie´s work for ROOT can be heard. We find influences of the good old hard rock school, heavy metal, but also more extreme genres common to the 80´s and 90´s. Traces of folk, but mainly pagan elements(Celtic and Viking) with dark melodies and magic, spiritistic and symbolic lyrics are present throughout the entire CALES production.
In 1998, a collection of songs commonly entitled "Mystery of Lost Equilibrium" comes out as a promo for record labels, however, only in 2000 CALES pen a contract with Redblack Production. The same year sees the release of an important album "Pass In Time", which is still welcome by fans all over the world. A year later, IronD Records releases a licensed version of "Pass In Time" for the Russian market.
Worth mentioning is also the ultra black metal project ENTRAILS, along with Blackosh featuring also Igor (ROOT) and Marthus (CRADLE OF FILTH). In 1999, ENTRAILS release "Serpent Seed", an album still recognized as a gem of the Czech extreme scene. Album won respect from fans as well as critics in Europe and the U.S.A.. Italian Iron Tyrant release a special vinyl including also live songs.
In 2003, a follower to "Pass In Time" comes out. The title is "Uncommon Excursion". The albums is step in a different direction - both in music and lyrics. In general, fans did not accept the move towards more melodic rock style, and the record did not succeed with the metal public as much as the previous releases. The other side of the coin meant that fans of other music genres found interest in CALES. On this album, singer DeSed was replaced by Skuny, who already contributed parts to "Pass in Time".
The general success and three released albums mean, that fans request a live performance by CALES. A live line-up is formed and CALES occasionally play concerts between 2003-2007.
In 2004, upon long premeditating, Blackosh leaves his band ROOT and devotes his effort exclusively to CALES; in between he also contributes songs for ex-ARAKAIN Aleš Brichta and for a short time also becomes a member of Aleš Brichta Band.
In 2006 Blackie closes another chapter and CALES become his one-man band. The entire production takes place in his own recording studio Descent, where the promo recording "Hymn Of Oblivion" comes to being, later finding its way to Metal Breath Production, a record label with which Blackosh consequently signs a contract for one album.
"Savage Blood" is out on 3. October 2007, quickly finding its American distributor in Relapse Records. In Europe and elsewhere this is taken care of by Plastic Head. The record also features a grand epic video for the song "From The Bosom Of Oblivion", originally from "Pass In Time". The spot was shot between 2004-2007 together with the swordsman-armourer and a film-maker Radim Bittner.
A New CD "KRF" Was released at the end of 2009 The material features vocals again - both singing and screaming - performed by Blackie himself. Still, it is faster and more fierce. The classical attributes of the albums "Pass In Time" and "Savage Blood" are still present with more focus on the folk melodies, massive storming force, as well as heavy majestic flare of the famous BATHORY kind.
