System Decay

Review @ Gr_met_Journal

28 October 2008
Few Days ago i received a big envelope containing the press kit of a band called System Decay. The whole thing was organised really professionally. Good artwork, a short DVD containing live footage of the band, a full bio and photos.
The first impression was pretty much good, but i had to hear the music in order to have a full image of the band.
Well, the CD is called "The End of Nothing" and it contains 4 songs. It' the first serious attempt of the guys (Also a 2 track demo). As they say in the bio these songs were composed in the firts period of the band. From the first hearing of the EP, i realised that i can't put a label on these guys' music. Agressive yet melodic, soft sometimes but also pessimistic. A good combination don't you think ?
"Nomad" is the song that opens the EP. The sample of a sandstorm in the beggining is prepairing the listener for what is gonna come next... Thrash / hardcore riffs pounding drums and aggressive vocals makes "Nomad" an amazing straight forward song. Also, YOU MUST HEAR what the middle section of the song. Great atmosphere !
"The End of Nothing" is the second track. This is a mainstream song based in cachy riffs and melodies. The highlight of the song is the middle part and the solo... Great job by the lead guitarist !
"These Scars". Well that's what I'm talking about ! Machine Head style riffs combined with Soulfly groove. The soundtrack to tear the place up ! I've got to add that the Brutal Vocals performed by Kostas Lolis (trigger) add more energy to the song !
"Enem(e)". The last track of the EP is also my favourite. Melody combined with agression and an amazing chorus creates a great song ! For me it's the Highlight of the EP.
Generally this is a really good effort from the guys. The only bad thing, is the weak production... The sound enginneer should have given more emphasis in creating a more strong, bass based soung.
To conclude, "The End of Nothing" left me a pleasant vibe while hearing it. I strongly believe that with hard work these guys can achieve a lot.
