Broken Valves

Review @ Nastasia

15 January 2011

Salvation in a piece of work that surely makes a statement

The hard rock band Broken Valves from Italian Palermo is a great example of how well good musicians can sublime classic rock and modern elements to create something that has a likeable old school sound as well as the catchiness of the modern music. When you notice rock’n’roll, you begin to hear heavy metal; when you hear a sweetness, you get overwhelmed by the sting of the song.

The riffs get from heavy to funky and the beats almost force you to nod your head to the rhythm. The Guns’N’Roses inspiration and other classic bands influence is undeniable but the whole sound is very fresh and up to date and anything but old fashioned. This band has a potential to gain fans of modern pop rock as well as lovers of hard and heavy genres.

Broken Valves managed to learn everything that makes a good, catchy song and used all of that to create their own, likeable creation. Listening to the songs you don’t get that feeling like you know what is going to come next. Although every song has verses, a refrain, some (very good) guitar solo and everything a song is supposed to have, it is not boring to listen to it like may be in case of many other ‘verse-refrain-verse-refrain-solo-refrain’ scheduled songs is. There are repeating lines and melodies that make the songs sound like one whole of course, but in a very nonviolent form.

What also shows the best of it is the voice of the main vocalist of the band. The band stays in the range of its own specific style and genre but the variety of songs gives a chance to listen to the mild tones of ballad coming to heavy almost screaming. Speaking about ballads, the third song of the EP, Fall, has a great spirit and happens to be very emotional without sounding pathetic or kitschy. When it comes to the title track, Salvation is more old school rock composition with lots of funky melody lines and grading from relatively calm positions to wild tones. The following track called Fight Your Fights All Alone is as combative as the name shows. The final track Why So Serious? has that ironically crazy atmosphere as one would suspect from the name and for sure is one of those that would stay in your head for a while.

Considering the fact that this is the first official release of the band there is a thing that has to be said – Great work! It is not as essential to be able to create something that would show the best of your skills as it can seem. But Salvation in a piece of work that surely makes a statement. There is no better way to show you are a band which’s name no one should better forget than by releasing a work of this quality and I am sure that Broken Valves knew that very well.
