Third Bullet

Review @ Onni

10 September 2009
The debut album of this English band was the real surprise for me. Not every young band can write so many things in their press-release: Third Bullet have written a song for UFC fighter “Relentless” Paul Taylor, another band’s song “Resistance Is Futile” is used by Harley Davidson for the advertising company, and other stuff. It actually means just one thing: public and mercantile people like this music. So I put this CD “Revelations” into my player expecting something modern and modish, harsh and rhythmic but with good melodies. No Revelations, of course.

It is almost what I’ve expected - except maybe the fact that in a whole it was the revelation. The English band of 3 guys balances on the border between commercial modern alternative/grunge and sincere energetic music. Can it be so indeed? Most of the commercial songs sound more or less false and pathetic, but 10 songs of “Revelations” are really natural, honest, written by talented composers and recorded by professional musicians with the good producer. This music is enough raw to be underground, enough heavy to be metal. It has enough melodies to be liked by many people, and enough energy to make you pay attention to it and to jump on the concert.

All the songs are nicely different: the first midtempo “My Deviation”, the fast and rhythmic “Resistance Is Futile”, the next is “Revelation” – calm and not as loud as the previous one, a touching meditative piece. “It Keeps Me Awake” – energetic and heavier one, “This Life” is the good powerful ballad with the great melody during the whole song, with the incredible chorus, the singer Stephen shows that he can intonate perfectly, artistically lay emphasis where it should be. “Clip My Wings” is the fast and furious piece with the expressive guitar riff, and “Something Sinister” reminds a bit heavy rock, with its catchy rhythm it will surely be a hit on the concerts. “Falling Down” is also a midtempo song, like the most on this album, but it’s a bit nervous, even tragic (as it should be with such a name, although). “Retreat” starts with the calm acoustic intro and turns out to be the quite classic ballad, nothing to say here. The last “Day By Day” is the longest on the album, a bit complicated, interesting song that shows the musicians’ skills in the end once more.

I don’t know if you would call it grunge or alternative or something else, but I’m pretty sure that they have a touch of rock’n’roll, they have these spirit of freedom, energy, catchy guitar riffs and some great melodies. It’s an interesting album and you will definitely hear about these guys (and from them) more.
