Dissimulation

Review @ Nattskog

26 August 2005
Dissimulation is a Black/Thrash Lithuanian band formed in 1993. In 12 years, the group can surprise us by the number of albums appearing in its discography: a demo, one 7 inches, two albums with this one. But, few albums in a long time does not mean "inactive": the first demo leaves in 1997 after the first members of Dissimulation - Venomous (bass and vocals) and Stabmeldys (battery) - found the guitarist who fitted them: Žilvinas (who was also on the keyboards on the demon). After Nekrofagas replaced Žilvinas at the guitar, a new recording is made: "Miglose..." already signed by their current label, Ledo Takas Records. In 2002 after some noticed gigs "Maras leaves", their first true album where the sound is made more "Black" that on all their other recordings. After having made the opening for Behemoth at Vilnius in 2003 and some other concerts, it is this year that Dissimulation leaves its new opus, "Prakeikimas" (i.e.: "Damnation"), always at Ledo Takas.

The album engages on a keyboards made introduction sounding like epic film music. The Black spirit is there from the beginning. After almost two minutes, the first notes of guitar make their appearance, sounding very Black/Death thanks to the guitar so fast and technical ! Thrash influences are strongly perceptible in the heavy riffs which cap the listener of a lead cover from the beginning. The environment which everybody knows in Black is still very present: even if many passages do not include any, ambient keyboards often come to obscure the music in a radical way (the conclusions of the first two titles are very speaking on the matter). Dissimulation is not really to be compared with any group which I know: scattered influences are easily recognizable, as passages which completely make think of Khold and others which will please Satyricon or Carpathian Forest’s fans. All that remains very scattered because the music is very personal in all its phases! No one could say "oh, that’s a copy of “This One”!" All the musicians are very skilled: Nekrofagas is excellent with the guitar, Stabmeldys is an excellent beater which can be emphasized and the song of Venomous is torn as it is necessary! While speaking about the song, it should be noticed that it is entirely in their native language (Lithuanian) what hangs perfectly with their music and their personal style.

So, Dissimulation signs an excellent album, touching different styles of black that makes a single and very personal work which mixes violence and smoothness, a compromise which is unfortunately too delicate to be often found. Special mention for the last title: "Karo Ugnys/Į Dausas", separated in two different parts, which is one of my favorites.
