There’s been quite a long tradition of French Grindcore going on in the last ten years or so. Obviously, some of them are best known for their funny antics and their delirious approach to music, but still bands like
Sublime Cadaveric Decomposition or
Inhumate have led the way and have made a name for themselves within the confidential scene of Grindcore.
Following that glorious lineage,
Jumping Jack Riot hails from Lyons and even though they formed back in 2008 only they've already released this one EP “Period Of Consequences” which show great professionalism in various numerous aspects.
The packaging, artwork and cover display some maturity you'd expect not from a first release but from some mature bands that's been playing around for quite some time. For a self-release, this is rather surprising and in my opinion it shows that this French band wants to make a first indelible impression. They’re here to kick ass and they’re not to be taken lightly.
Musically, we have five tracks which are rather long in terms of Grindcore standards but since they're quite nicely arranged it's best to have five tracks worth 20 minutes of music rather than have your typical
Anal Cunt 5 seconds tracks.
JJR's Grindcore is laced with various influences, from Crust to
Death Metal which is the predominant feature of this EP. There’s some variety to be found on each and every track even though the sonic aggression feels like an overall homogeneous blow! Gaggle Of Deads, the very first track, is the perfect opener with vocals a la
Disgorge or AKP. Some heavy bulldozer here to take a few teeth out of your precious smile, believe me.
The whole EP carries on pure brutality till the final interlude “hidden” after Chrysanthemum DNA which plays some industrial notes quite in harmony with the bleak “grayish” atmosphere displayed on the artwork. I've found various arrangements, notably from the bass lines, which reminded me of early
Macabre; the kind of stuff that is inherently joyless but still is ridden with irony and bitten smiles.
That EP is a grower and the more you listen to it, the more you find subtleties which make for a great Grindcore record and not just an attempt at being the noisiest newest act around.
Again, for a first release, the overall feel is rather impressive and I have the ominous feeling that we're to hear some more from this young and yet very talented band.
Most people that I know and who despise Grindcore usually do because they either cannot handle short bursts of pure violence or just senseless noise but if you’re into bands a la
Rotten Sound or
Kill The Client, you ought to pay those Frenchies a visit to their MySpace and discover some pretty decent shit!
