Infection, Peruvian death metal newcomers, have been honing their sound since they formed in 2006, and have now released their debut, '
Necrokindergarden' after a demo and an EP. The new album contains tracks from those releases, with a number of newer compositions and an obligatory
Monstrosity cover.
It is to
Cannibal Corpse and
Monstrosity you should look for
Infection's main influences, as both seem to play main roles in helping to carve out
Infection's sound. I mistakenly believed before I listened to the album that I would be listening to early
Sepultura-esque material, given the proximity of Peru to Brazil, but I was surprised to find something totally different.
Infection play brutal death metal with touches of groove and blast, slam and grind. Tracks like the brilliantly titled 'Fecal Burrito' and the thunderous title track worship the ground that Corpsegrinder et al walk on, and the short blast of 'Gastric
Disorder' and the grindcore-esque 'Malignant
Tumor' showcase an ability to mix it up.
It may be tough for
Infection to break through into a massive audience in the same way
Cannibal Corpse have, given their geographical location and their entrance into a scene that is both in an upsurge and in threat of stagnating under its own popularity. But
Infection have a major boost in the fact that they have a thick, organic sound; lacking the cold sterility of many modern death bands, and yet not harking back to 'OLD SKOOL BROOTAL DEATH!!' that some newer bands would like to claim. They just play solid death metal, and fans of
Cannibal Corpse,
Monstrosity and even early Death fans would be fans of this. Recommended.
