Kragens

Review @ Julien

26 October 2007
France definitely offers us very nice albums during this month of September. After the superb Uncolored Wishes, here is coming Kragens’ new opus. I must admit that I had never heard of this band, but after the listening I’ve done here, my body screams for rest. As a result, I’m going to buy the other albums and quickly go and see them in concert. For someone like me, a usual customer of bands such as Horrorscope, Kragens is a great band to listen to.

If this album convinced me so much, it is because it’s a perfect example of what should always be power/heavy metal. With an album such as this one, the band should be able to open all the doors worldwide. I now understand better why Nightmare has strengthened its new album: it is to be able to compete with Kragens in the future while being on-stage together. Jocks apart, this album is really convincing because it offers an elegant heavy metal, powerful and original. It is original in the sense that tempo and ambiance variation from one track to the next are impressive. From the major blast to melodic riffs, the band can do everything. The band was able to accommodate to its own style riffs heard thousands of time, but here done with so much delicacy that they look really original at the end. But the band also uses riffs fully original and during those, the headbanging really hurts. I want to see them in concert. I want to hear these genial guitar soli sounding both melodious and technical. I want to hear these riffs as much loud as they are sharp.

But what really makes the difference is the so polyvalent and so technical voice. Renaud Espeche is easy both in the powerful domain and in the more acute heavy metal. His mastery is a real pleasure to hear. The small vibratos during heavy singing are huge and of a really impressive subtlety. I’m really looking forward hearing that voice live. To give you a better idea, even the ballad has its own ‘crunchy’ sound and a sensible and powerful singing. The sound is monstrously powerful while being signed by Tue Madsen… He succeeds to amalgamate efficiency with his personality. The result is terrific and nevertheless the sound his personal and perfectly identifiable. That definitely illustrates the band’s great maturity and its skills to find innovative sounds.

Huge slap, this is exactly what I was looking for these days. I’m going to listen in loop to Kragens’ new album and I won’t be tired of it before long. I’m really looking forward being the 19th of November, date at which they will play at the Nouveau Casino. It’s going to be huge.

VIVA FRENCH METAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
