Curse Your Name

Review @ ryan5

29 January 2011

"Great Album, Great Band. A great all round package"

Grade 8 was a year of music discovery and one of the best years of my life. (Jack shit work and one hell of a funny year.) I had just came across heavier music such as BMTH, Opeth etc. (Previously i’d listened to Nirvana , Fear Factory, Placebo (I know what you’re think but they’re fucking good), Grinspoon, iron Maiden, Pantera, Metallica (of course), After the fall (etc etc).
So metalcore like ‘Curse Your Name’ had only just begun blaring into my ears, and hey, I loved it. I begun listening to them (and plenty of others that id listed in word documents) at school during Computing lessons. I had found a pretty good website called aimini.net which had an abundance of metal that had been awaiting my arrival. I first started with the song “shiver syringe” and absolutely loved it. Oddly enough I thought the band was shiver syringe so after a minute or so recorrecting myself, I labelled Curse Your Name a band to download. Since then I haven’t looked back.

Firstly some may say the recording is shithouse, but I beg to differ. I seem to like ‘this’ distorted sound, it just makes it sound better in my opinion; gives the band a heavy-grunge type of feeling. The sound is unique, which is why I like it, plus it isn’t a shitty tingy sound like other recordings. The first song, ‘Beyond the flesh” is not a bad song to begin a debut album but it could be better. The growls are not very good at all, if you can call them growls that is. There is minimal if no clean vocals, which is a sad thing as Ryan Camp’s clean vocals are just about the best I’ve heard from a metalcore band.
“Nameless”, the second song of the self-titled opus and is one of my favourite songs on the album. It has melody, structure and is just a damn good song. The lyrics are audible and the musicianship (although I know little of music itself) is very good. The chorus if brilliantly sung, with added ‘growls’ to give the listener the metalcore touch; Overall a very good song.
Endless Struggle”, is the fourth song on the self-titled opus; and a very good one at that. The clean vocals again are very good and the ‘growls’ work well. Around 2:20 into the song there is a break in the song, which in my opinion helps as a sort of “concentrator” because you stop and listen as a natural reaction to the abrupt silence; and then the awesomeness continues. This song is slower in some parts and the tempo continues to go from fast to slow, which is better than the same old same old. Therefore the song doesn’t get boring, but being five minutes long could be a little too long for this song I’m afraid.
“Remain Forever”, is the fifth song of the self-titled opus. It is very different to the songs before it. It is not fast, just a nice slow tempo song the whole way through till the end. I think this song really emphasizes the talent that this band has. It shows that they can play melodic and heavy pieces, as well as the slow, depressing pieces. This song I particularly like because of those reasons, and the fact that it is just a great, slow tempo song. Definitely a great song, and shows promise for many more years to come for Curse Your Name.
Distant”, is the seventh song of the self-titled opus. This would have to be by second favourite song on the album. I love the start of the song with the slow tempo drumming and acoustic guitar playing. (Please correct me if i’m wrong). It sets the rest of the song up just like the intense drumming of “In honour of reason” does for Fleshgod Apocalypse’s opening track on “Oracles”. After this 40 second acoustic encounter and slow tempo drumming, the song takes a heavy and fast tempo with some incredibly good clean vocals once again. Once the initial 20 seconds of sheer shock by how good the “change up” is, the guitar and drumming shifts to a more head-banging brutality. Along with this comes the “easy-to-understand” lyrics by Camp which you can also chant when banging your head, as if you were at a Buried in Verona concert singing “YOUR FACE LOOKS BETTER BLEEDING”, with the all mighty bang of the head that continues with the breakdown afterwards.
Shiver Syringe”, is the tenth song on the self-titled opus. This song is what first made me like Curse Your Name and it was what made me buy their album. I have always liked the start of this song with the ding ding ding and then the guitar followed by the swift bass kick and the incessant little tap on a symbol. After some brilliant clean vocals the song takes a fast tempo twist which has been incorporated brilliantly into the song. During the heavy parts of the song the bass is very deep and sounds fucking amazing along with the already praised vocals of Ryan Camp. Shiver Syringe sounds very much a drug based song presumably on a member of the bands life or even on Camp’s life. Whatever it’s about it is still my favourite song.
Beyond the light”, is the last song on the self-titled opus and doesn’t disappoint by any means. This song goes for seven minutes but a damn good seven minutes. It changes from fast tempos to slow and atmospheric tempos that drag you in to listen to Camp’s enticing vocals.
Overall this debut album is one of the best I’ve heard from any band and is a promising thing. Probably the most significant thing about Curse Your Name is the vocals, musicianship and their ability to put out an album that has almost every song great or good in its own right. I am very, very keen for their next opus to be released and hope that more people support Curse Your Name, as they are a very underrated band.
