Calvarium Funestus

Comment @ Lammoth

The sound on ‘Agios Ischyros Baphomet’ is murky, it’s not impenetrable by any means. Of course, this detracts nothing from the overall feel but rather adds to the authenticity. Berserker’s drums are particularly noticeable – gloriously unproduced, they sound like a clump of wood thumping off a coffin. Love it. Guitarists Bael and Halphas combine to produce a somewhat atypical BM framework that screeches, soars and (literally) leads the way - majestic and just plain different.

The stand-out hymn is arguably ‘Agios Athanatos’, which contains enough bold variation and rich imagination to put many of the scene’s big hitters to shame. This track conjures forth an atmosphere of grim negativity - ridiculously uplifting and demonstrating that these filthy fiends possess more than just angst in their armoury. The eerie eclecticism remains evident on ‘Infernal Agony’ and confirms the presence of a very special volume in my stereo.

It’s not incidental that Calvarium Funestus hail from another continent: their chaotic yet controlled take on the subgenre is both refreshing and intriguing. Demonic denouncer Agaliareth coats the caustic aggression in a subtle, unobtrusive tinkering of keys and Lammoth’s bass can be felt deep inside the eardrums.

‘AiB’ announces the arrival of Calvarium Funestus as a black, nihilistic, misanthropic force to contend with.
