I noticed that in my previous post I didn't really make my Sarcasm apparent, "My Twin" isn't actually my favourite song.  It was more of a subtle jab at them producing something that sounded a little too mainstream for my liking.  It sounded as though they were trying to appease the masses, but they aren't really that kind of band.  I remember when I first heard the single before the album was released and thinking that they would have to do a lot better than this, or they just sold out.  I'm glad they didn't, and it seems that every album from Viva Emptiness forward has been a stronger effort than the preceding one.  Definitely not something I can say about many bands out there.  Oh, also, my favourite song by them is probably "Unfurl."  There is a lot of emotion behind all of their music, but this is one of the few that I'd say I really 'feel.'

Like the older stuff the most, huh?  I assumed you would prefer the earlier stuff, but I can see why you would like the newer stuff more.  I like when they combine elements from their earlier albums with the sound they developed in the 'mid-period' you describe.  That said, I would actually lump Viva Emptiness in with the albums from the later period.  To me it sounds like the beginning of this new Hybrid sound, conjoining competencies developed in the earlier albums with a fresh sound.

I'm interested to see what's next.  What do you think about a song like "Departer?"  In the middle they play around with the vocals a bit, something that they haven't really attempted before.  I can honestly say that I liked it, and I would like to hear some more in the future.

I actually like My Twin, which is strange, because I usually Hate that kind of music- but it was catchy like a motherfucker and had that trademark Katatonia touch that kept me coming back to it, definitely a successful "sell-out" song by any means.
Also, why is commercial music a problem for somebody that likes In Flames, Killswitch Engage and Lamb of God?

Viva Emptiness was actually the easuest choice for that era for me, meaning that it was very obvious in the traits I described about that era. Accents are delivered in the wrong places a lot, there's a lot of deep-seated Anger and even the use of swearing in the lyrics (clearly decipherable, I might add) just makes it a very stressed, tense album. It's one of the few albums that manages to successfully channel those types of emotions, though I can't say I enjoyed it as much as I did their other works.

Departer is a great song, a perfect conclusion to a near-masterpiece of an album. It's almost like they dropped all their metal and rock elements completely from their sound for that song and all that's left is just the essence of Kataonia itself. So yeah, I really enjoyed it, but I'd rather they just make a few songs in that vein here and there rather than put out a whole album in that style, don't want to go overboard now.

EDIT: Just realized how strange it is that we're talking about Katatonia on a Deathcore thread.

What if I told you Katatonia IS deathcore?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Yeah, I thought it was an interesting song, but I definitely wouldn't want  a whole album centred around that sound.  It would be a little too boring.

I'll admit that I do listen to a lot of mainstream bands.  But I think that a lot of these bands do more things well than poorly, and that drives their success in the main stream.  Also, you can't really Hate on them for wanting to make money.  Catering to a niche doesn't really pave the way to rockstar status.

Honestly, I like so many different musical styles that it's hard not to get caught up in the mainstream at times.  Also, I'm not really a metalhead by any regard; I would consider myself more of a hard rocker.  Most of the bands I listen to that no one has ever heard of aren't metal bands.  But, I'll give anything a chance, and that's how I got into Death Metal, post Hardcore, Metalcore, and deathcore.

is there anything wrong with listening to Mainstream stuff? I don't see any problem with it, whats good is good and whats bad is bad. End of story. You have made a very good point there.

There's Nothing wrong with listening to mainstream stuff by any means- I like Opeth, Maiden, Priest and Metallica, as well as a shitload of non-metal. It's just that a lot of mainstream bands have a sound that appeals to a larger majority, and thus the sound is very dumbed-down and bland. There are some mainstream bands, however, that have carved their own niche in the music market with a sound that is all their own and deserve respect for that.

If Katatonia's Deathcore, then call me a Deathcore fan.

PS: kinda off topic, but mini, can you get rid of that giant smiley face thing in your signature? It's a fucking eyesore.

@Mercenarion, youtube my friend, good ole youtube. lol,

@Enigmatick, it's not your standard Deathcore though, there's just something different, they sound better than say Whitechapel, and their songs aren't very "samey" and it's a good mix of wankery and Deathcore.  plus it has a very classical sound IMHO.
