Mercenarion says : To all that will understand, metal is what pushes us to our limits. It expresses Eternity, never stopping. It is a cause to Fight for. Pop music is too realistic. Hearing a guitar solo, and then witnessing it is like seeing something that is impossible. People may say, even within the metal community, that there are too many sungenres. Well, those are what keeps us who we are. Uniqueness. Looking at popular culture, you are either rap, pop, RnB, or country. We are not those. The metal community is Death Metal, Black Metal, traditional metal, Dark Metal, Thrash Metal, Power Metal, and all of those others going on into eternity. When you hear someone say that metal has too many subgenres, just remember one thing. They are trying to make a limit on metal. They are not metal. We are the rejected music of the world. First it was Neanderthals making percussion, pan flutes and such in Medieval, the Classical music of the 1600's to 1900's, rock and roll of the early 1900's to mid, and now there is us. We are metal. We are shunned by all but we don't sit down. We will create a guitar solo so Insane that no one could understand it, but do we stop? No! So what if modern society hates us, it is Hate that drives us. They can't handle us. We are the counter-culture.

This recieves my vote for best post ever on a Metal forum. THIS is the real spirit of metal we metalheads all need/have. I keep it in high standard myself being one of the two diehard metalheads at my college

Very good sense of humor my friend. Anyway is anyone here who can say with certainty what is metal and what is not? I don't think so. I can speak for myself.

When I started to hear - at the age of 13 - this kind of music I - like everyone - think that I was doing something special. I was imagine myself a kind of metal pioneer a Viking Warrior if you like.
 But when I
started listening to other kinds of music I realized that there are very
interesting types of music who deserve my attention.
And also I started not to believe in some myths that previously use to believe. For example, one of these myths is the myth who says that metal is addressed to a few and special people. Wrong! MILLIONS of people like this kind of music. It's a POP (popular) kind of music. That is pop music doesn't mean in any case that this kind of music has no quality as some people want to imagine. And of course, is neither the only nor the best kind of music. There are other types of music that is as interesting as the metal music.
And yes my friend newscctv they are musical lines who connect Deep Purple and Gorgoroth.
Finally I want to end it with some words to the friend
Mercenarion. Soon or late you're gonna realise that the listening of metal is not gonna transform you to a Viking or Metal warrior. And
when you grow up a little bit more you will understand that you yourself was Nothing more than a teenager who liked to listen to a music genre a little wilder than
others at slightly higher intensity and maybe leave your hair a little
longer in length.
And believe me this is very heroic.

What I said was more of a kickass motivational speech. Wait a minute... I didn't say anything about Viking warriors? My little speech here was meant to say that that even though we are hated (metalheads and such) we shouldn't give up on our genre. No Viking Warriors here. Damn, I really should of included Vikings...

And whitedragon... I do listen to more than just metal. Whether it be classical, folk, trance/techno, ambient, among others. I just Hate mainstream music today because it is soulless.

It won't transform me (metal), but every song I hear in the genre give me a new idea to research (i.e.: most of the songs by Mirrorthrone made me want to research Nihilism. So I did). Metal won't transform me (duh), but it will make me know more about life as it gives me ideas. I don't just listen to a song and move on. I stick to that song and learn about the background Ideas in the song.

I don't listen to metal just for the music, I listen to it mostly because of the beauty and knowledge hidden in the lyrics. Although, some Brutality on the side isn't that bad. I also don't listen to metal because others do. I listen for myself not others.

First of all I want to say that what I wrote is not my intention to offend anyone.

You think you Hate the mainstream. Then you should Hate a large number of metal bands because they are mainstream. What is the music of Iron Maiden? How can you be an underground band when you sold more than seventy Million albums? Unless you like listening to bands who listen only to their relatives.Whether you like it or not any kind of music should be somewhat mainstream otherwise is Doomed to die. And of course behind metal music is a huge industry that sells everything. Albums tickets tatoos shirts pants almost everything.

What I write was not to come into conflict with you, but just to say my opinion.
And believe me, I like very much every word you wrote. You remind me of myself 21 years back. When in order to see my favorite bands used to travel 500 kilometers to go to the concert Area and another 500 kilometers to return back home..

Anyway finally what I wanted to say is: metal is another genre of music like any other.
I never SAW fans from other genres as "enemies". They listen to the music they like and I listen to the music I like. I never categorize a kind of music as mainstream or commersial because, in my opinion all the kinds of music are mainstream and commercial. If were not commercial simply will not exist. Any kind of music wants an audience. The bigger the better.

And as about WHAT IS METAL?
If you ask a thousand people they will tell you a thousand different answers. As about me metal includes Deep Purple, Van Halen, Paradise Lost, Fates Warning, Slayer, Monster Magnet, Alice In Chains just to name some bands. A popular and highly respected music genre. And yes includes even bands like Bon Jovi (great songwriters not noise producers like some "extreme" bands).

I usually refer to mainstream as electronica (since pop refers to all popular music), rap (with the exception of underground), modern RnB, and anything else that would fit in. That, or music that has little to no talent... I suck at explanations sometimes, thanks for the point (that point is one I keep forgetting). Mainstream metal though has talent still (unless it is nu-metal). Thank you.

Even includes Bon Jovi? Don't say "even", he IS included in the genre. Same heaviness as Iron Maiden (my opinion, no murdering me). Bon Jovi is awesome.

Noise bands... something tells me you Hate most Grindcore don't you . Same here. Only some exceptions. The metal I listen to needs somewhat of a melody, seems to be the same with you, eh?

I wasn't offended... just confused with the Viking Warrior point

I totally agree with the description you give now to mainstream.
And as about the Vikings I mention them having myself in my mind and what I was feeling about metal at this period.
I'm a Heavy Metal boy from '80s...
At those days if you wanted to belong to a particular group of people should have a very specific look and a certain lifestyle.

After All this discussion can ? call you a friend of mine?
I have friends from some countries but NoNe from Canada.
And by the way my name is George.

P.S.: Yes I don't like grindcore. Too much noise too less music.

Can't agree more than what Mercanarion said in the first paragraph of his answer. Modern mainstream music is hollow and soulles. Some classmates once asked me what do you think of this technosong, even when you're a diehard metalhead? I listened to it and all i heared was a boringly repetitive basssound, some higher parts and a whiny, bitch-like female vox. Then i asked them do YOU like this? he said yes. I said him that there's Nothing exciting or original to it. he looked at me like... wft does he says. H
He claimed it was nice to dance too and f*** girs on. I took then my cellphone and played some metal (Hangar 18 - Megadeth). Then said shocked: how can you listen to that? You can't dance on it, you barely understand what they say...

I answered that the song was about the Cold war/nukes and yours's about... fcking girls? Intresting stuff man!
he ensured me that I would never find a girlfriend/wife by being metalhead
I was like: Fuck off and Die, idiot

So far the opinion off the mainstream youngsters about metalheads (srry for some offensive words I used in my reply)
