I've mainally been listening to Thrash Metal, but here's a few Death Metal records i've been listening to in the meantime:

-Nihilist (1987-1989): This compilation pieces together all of Nihilist's demos. Nihilist, for those that don't know, were the original incarnation of Entombed, and these demos are among the earliest recordings of Swedeath. The songs on this compilation are excellent; fitting well together and striking home with a level of energy and ferocity that eclipses most band's entire careers. The riffwork is heavily based in thrash, and their thick, grimy Attack is extremely memorable and Addictive, and the drumming, while not as accomplished as later on, is still actually pretty dynamic. Essential work if you're a historian of metal.

-Incantation's Entrantment of Evil: This EP was Incantation's very first official release on vinyl. All of these songs are on Onward to Golgotha, but this is pretty interesting if mostly for personnel and historical reasons. The lineup here is literally entirely different from the debut except for John McEntee, most notably featuring Will Rahmer of Mortician doing vocals. It's an interesting look into the band's history, and the songs are great pieces of thick, doomy death metal. The production is pretty bad but I have a really bad vinyl rip of it anyway - it's a little soft and indistinct sounding. But it's a pretty cool listen if you love the band.

Shit i've been listening to in death metal:

-Autopsy's Severed Survival: Absolute classic. Filth-ridden, Vicious riffs, devastating bass lines, Chris Reifert's Insane vocal delivery; this has pretty much everything that makes a straight-forward Death Metal record great. The songs are well put together and extremely memorable, the riffs are fantastic, and the drumming is very good. Mental Funeral will always be my favourite, but this is a classic all the way.

(BTW the tracks i've heard from the new record sound *unbelievably* fucking Sick in the way that only Autopsy can do it. Sure as Hell beats what i've heard from the new Morbid Angel... speaking of which...)

-Morbid Angel's Heretic: I'm actually quite a bit more leniant on this record than most. I'm a huge Morbid Angel fan; Altars of Madness is just about my favourite Death Metal record ever and they've quite a few other records which are stunning.

Heretic isn't a complete loss of an album, but it suffers from a fuckload of problems. The production job is about as terrible as everybody says; the guitar tone is absolutely rancid and reduces even the good riffs on this record to slop. It's seriously awful and it has some of the worst note definition i've ever heard on a Death Metal record.

But what really sinks the album is how mish-mashy the composition it. The riffs are really awkward and convoluted a lot of the time on this record, and most of the Ideas are just really poorly pieced together in general. I'm not even sure what the fuck could even really be done to fix it, and while it's cool Trey Azagthoth was trying to experiment with polyrhythms it just comes off as weirdly forced and, again, really awkward.

It's a shame, because there are some pretty good things here. There are some good moments on here, and the performances are as strong as ever. (Steve Tucker is way fucking better than David Vincent ever was after Covenant, ESPECIALLY nowadays) I'm not even sure what the Hell Azagthoth was going for, but it doesn't work for me at all.

-Entombed's Left Hand Path: Classic record. This was one of the first full-fledged Swedeath LPs, and while I prefer the Nihilist demos and Dismember's Like an Ever Flowing Stream, this is still an excellent record that pretty much showcases the basics of the Swedeath style incredibly well.

The riffwork on this record is incredibly strong, with a strong level of influence from the really Extreme thrash and early Death Metal camps, but there's also a distinctly punk-ish feels to some of the rhythms in the riffs and the drumming. (After All, before the Death Metal craze, Sweden was a hotzone of Hardcore punk) The lead guitar work is really very good, despite how relatively simple they are - compared to the likes or Morbid Angel - and the drumming is excellent. Nicke Andersson has always played with a really unique sense of groove and timing that few other Death Metal drummers have; he's one of my favourites. (though the drums don't make this record quite as much as Clandestine) L-G Petrov's vocals are some of the best in the entire Death Metal genre, with a convincingly tortured vibe to them. And the production sound pretty much defined the Swedeath sound: Dry, mid-heavy, with that filthy buzzsaw guitar tone, the somewhat Dry drum tones, a lot of reverb etc. There was quite a bit of attention payed to the mix on this record, everything sounds excellent and in its proper place.

I think there are a few Swedish Death Metal releases better than it, but Left Hand Path is great in its own right. It's certainly what i'd point somebody toward if they wanted to know about this style of death metal.

-Incantation's Upon the Throne of Apocalypse: This is the inverted version of Mortal Throne of Nazarene; the tracklist is flipped around and the production job is overall a more dimmed and bass heavy than Mortal Throne. This is the version of the record I prefer the most, even though it's by far the rarer version.

Anyway, this is damn near as worthy as Onward to Golgotha, one of the most monumental death metal records to ever emerge from the NY scene. The biggest difference is that the song structures are more streamlined; the songs are, for the most part, shorter than the debut and despite the bigger emphasis on the doomy part of their sound, it comes off as punchier. This doesn't have the overwhelmingly suffocating, oppressive vibe of Onward to Golgotha, which is why I think this is a bit weaker, but this is still excellent death metal. The riffs are a mixture of twisting tremolo riffs and crawling, crushing doom metal riffs, backed by Craig Pillard's horrifyingly evil gutterals and Jim Roe's superb drumming. The riffs on this record are amazing, absolutely exuding that malignantly evil vibe that only Incantation can do best, and Pillard's vocals are amazing. They're not quite as brilliant as what he laid down for OtG, but they fit the nature of the music like a glove.

The production is great, the songs are outstanding - "Abolishment of Immaculate Serenity", "Demonic Incarnate", and "The Ibex Moon" are among THE greatest songs Incantation ever wrote - and the performances are top notch. Death metal like this only comes once in a blue moon, but Incantation always deliver. Not as essential as Onward, but seriously no matter what version of this LP you (Mortal Throne or Upon The Throne) it's a fantastic record.

No fifth this time, sorry!

I just got up my review of Autopsy's 'Macabre Eternal'!
That's the Death Metal album I'm into now.

Also into Hellwitch's 'Syzygial Miscreancy'. Balls to the wall fast album full of great technicality and rollercoaster songs. It's also really short, which I think really works for this album.

Hellwitch rules, they were one of the originators of technical Death Metal, that album is an underrated classic. They gotta second album out after almost 15 years of Hiatus called omnipotent convocation, it's pretty much the same sound that was on Szygial miscreancy

It's funny, I think you're The One that told me about them back like 8 months ago.
And I Saw that thread again about 3 weeks ago and tried them out.

I'd MUCH rather Loudpipes' post than yours. He actually tells us why he's listening to those and offers us some actual reading and thought, your pointless list does Nothing for the thread.

To contribute to the thread- I haven't been listening to a lot of DM lately (I've been to busy rockin' the fuck out to Kvelertak) but I'll contribute what I have.

Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick
The only MA album I actually own on disc, unfortunately. Lucky enough, it's my favorite release by them- Altars of Madness was just too spastic and whacked-out for me (I know, there's probably something wrong with me) but it's not without merit, and Covenant is good, but it just doesn't measure up to this one- mixes just the right amount of thrashy death intensity with slow, sludgy riffs. David Vincent does a great vocal performance too, I've always really liked his raspy-death-growl, keeps me comin' back for more.

Augury - Concealed
Holy shit this is one Fucked Up motherfucking album. They actually have (frequently occurring) operatic-type female vocals, some really melodic riffs and buttloads of other instruments thrown in, and it STILL doesn't lose any of its Core Brutality, somehow. Definitely a second-tier Masterpiece and perhaps a future classic, we'll see. It's too bad their follow-up wasn't quite up to par.

The Monolith Deathcult - Trivmvirate
Merc, have I ever told you how much I love you? You showed me these guys and I love it. This is how I picture industrial Death Metal to sound- a Cold, mechanized feel, completely Alien atmosphere, and lots of motherfuckin' groove. I've seen a bit of love for TMD here but I've almost never seen them mentioned anywhere else (not even in passing)- criminally unknown band.

You know what? I don't have five, so just for the Hell of it-

Kvelertak - Kvelertak

FUCK.
YEAH.
RIFFS WORTHY ENOUGH TO MASTURBATE TO ON EVERY SONG.
FUCKIN' PUNK ATTITUDE.
BIT O' BLACK FUCKIN METAL JUST FOR THE MOTHERFUCKIN FUCK OF IT CAUSE THEY'RE JUST THAT GODDAMN COOL.
UNNNNNNGH
