sunwheel says : I really like the old period of Burzum. I don't know what I must think when I listen to Fallen. Sometimes I think, "is this blackmetal or not?"

Varg himself says he didn't release any Black Metal albums after Hvis Lyset TAR Oss (that's right, he doesn't consider Filosofem Black Metal for some stupid reason). Anyway, why does it have to be black metal? It's music made to set a mood. This is something Varg has said that I actually agree with--Burzum is not about pandering to an already-existing genre; it's about creating music with Mood and atmosphere. When Black Metal is the best method of getting a certain tone across, he uses it. It shouldn't matter what the genre is as long as the music is good.

I would consider Fallen to be more viking-ish metal with a Black Metal undercurrent.

Burzum's great because there's really no period where the music 'sucks' or goes really bad. He released one piss-poor album (Dauoi Baldrs) and everything else was fairly solid. Besides, DB was crap due mostly to constraints on what instruments he had access to while in prison. Anyway, I'm not like a lot of others who feel the last 2 Burzum albums are an Insult to Burzum and Black Metal, because I thouroughly enjoy both. I will agree however that earlier Burzum releases (the Big Four albums) were much, much better. Hvis Lyset TAR Oss and Filosofem are some of my favourite albums of all time.

Oh, and I think this should be brought into discussion.
Has anyone else heard Vikernes' plans to re-record the original four albums? He is doing this and plans on releasing them some time this or next year. I for one am quite uncertain and I have to admit I probably won't jump on buying these instantaneously the way I did with Belus and Fallen, pre-ordering them months before their actual release. But we'll see how good they are.

I'm excited about the release too but... 3 releases in less that 3 years? isn't he rushing it too much?

Are you kiddin? Varg recorded Aske and the first four albums in an eighteen month period. Only difference was he released them gradually. Even now he's doing that, but not so much so.

I know what you're trying to say but back then was totally different than now. His style has evolved. The way Aske is composed and sounds is totally different to Fallen if you'd ask me.I'm not questioning his musicianship btw.

We'll see when the album is released.

Well, Varg has often called himself obsessive and in a few interviews he's said that he can't surpress all the music he comes up with and can't work any other way besides non-stop. The only reason he didn't release so much in prison was because he spent most of his time studying and compiling data about Ancient Norwegian Culture, which he used in the lyrics and themes of his last four albums.

Never really liked Aske myself, even as a huge Burzum fan. I don't get the people who say they Hate Burzum but like Aske. Aske to me comes off as not having as much effort put into it as the full lenghts. That, and the Fact that the version of A Lost Forgotten Sad Spirit on Aske is not nearly as good as the s/t album version.
