The title says it all!

What era of Varg's carreer do you think is the best and why?

For me its definately his early days because Det Som Engang VAR is my favourite album from him. 0

Wait, why would you call his middle era Filosofem to Hlidskjalf?
Filosofem should be with the other albums. Plus, most Burzum fans lump the first 4 albums together as the 'pure' Burzum. And lastly--this is the most important thing--Hvis Lyset Tar Oss and Filosofem were recorded in the same year!

Oh, and I've never heard of anyone saying that the post-prison Burzum is better than pre-prison Burzum

Anyway, I think there should be 4 sections here:
Demo Burzum (before studio albums)
pre-prison Burzum (self-titled to Filosofem)
imprisoned Burzum (Dauoi Baldrs to Hlidskjalf) *there's almost no point having this as an option 'cause no one's gonna vote for it 0
post-prison Burzum (Belus and onward)

But anyway, not voting until Filosofem is put in with the other Burzum albums. 0

I refuse to vote on this because the poll completely ignored the self-titled, the Aske EP and Det Som Engang Var. Those three releases are completely different musically to anything he's ever done and should be considered.

Means that it covers all the albums and releases up to.... And yes I did consider Det Som Engang Var in my opening post.

@Infinity- you're right I should have, but I don't know that much about Burzum's (Varg's) history. So I decided to just split his albums and EP/Demos up without a timeline or anything using the dates of his releases. 0

So you thought he recorded Filosofem in prison??? 0

no, I split the albums up into threes along his history. Thats all I did, and included the other EP's/demos around it?

As I said I didn't go by date.

Alrighty then.
Anyway, to answer the poll (if Filosofem was with the other metal albums) I'd say that period is best bar-none. It brought the most musical progression to Black Metal; each new album had somewhere new to take the genre and ended up developing into a subgenre all its own, which I think no other band has done before or since. Varg at the time had a full control of atmospheres (except in the self-titled which didn't really have much of an atmosphere despite what a lot of people say), and he used them in an intelligent way that was never cornball. Even when he used an Element like repetition, he used it wisely, throwing in subtleties to Push the music forward.
