I agree on the agressiveness thing, but moving on:
Enigmatick, I didn't know you knew about Be'lakor! I didn't know anyone who did... and while I've barely heard 5 songs from them I really like em.
As far as Arch Enemy goes, I like everything up to and including Burning Bridges. Their album Stigmata is a legend to me... I just love love love that album.

My general opinion about melodeath is that it has steeply gone downhill since the mid 90s and now it seems to be a lot of very overrated bands from Sweden ripping each other off. But this is one of those diamond-in-the-rough genres. As Be'lakor proves, there's great melodeath out there, it's just hard to find.
Thought I'd contribute to the thread by posting a song by a very obscure band...
After Johan Liiva left Arch Enemy in 99 and before he formed Hearse, he was in a band called NonExist, which only put out one album before (unfortunately) disbanding. Listen:

Now THAT is some awesome shit. What do you guys think?

It was well executed if Nothing else. Not really a big fan of the chunky groove-ish riffs they got going on there but it was alright, I suppose it'd probably be better to a melodic Death Metal fan.

Lemme throw in a rec of my own. Now, you guys all know that the difference between Finnish melodic death and Swedish melodic death, right? Well, if you don't, Finnish melodeath tends to have a shitload of "atmospheric" keyboards and clean vocals and whatnot (examples of the style would be Omnium Gatherum and Insomnium) and Swedish melodic death tends to have a distinct, "chunky groove" riff style (examples would be Arch Enemy, that band Infinity posted above and Dark Tranquillity). I moderately enjoy Finnish melodeath and don't like Swedish melodeath.

Anyways, the point I'm trying to get at is that I never found a band that blended the two styles cohesively, until now. Band's called Eventide, give 'er a good ol' gander.

I couldn't really find any songs on youtube that showed the more Swedish edge of their music, but it's definitely there.
