okay let settle this once and for all 0

I definately think that SoM is surperior over M-A and this is why.

Firstly SoM looks alot better and is about 10x easier to navigate through.
The forums aren't as crumpled up as in M-A
The reviews are more focused on the actuall music rather than why Varg is a racist
We get more points for our submitions 0
There is a commenting system on SoM
Easier to find the bands you are looking for (from my perspective)

M-A does have some ups aswell and the main ones are;

massive data base
Forum is very active
more reviews than the SoM (although the french side on SoM does have it good aswell)
Also their team seems to be larger than SoM so you get your submitions validated quicker.

False. M-A has NO ads whatsoever, something SoM has a Ton of, the site design is much more simpler and minimalistic and is more geared towards a simple display of content. Plus, you clearly use SoM more often, which Means you're more used to it so of course it's easier to navigate.

What does that even mean? M-A's quality standard for reviews is Far higher than this website, I can tell just by the quality of some reviews I've seen here. M-A has more reviews, better reviews, and the people of the site even Filter out shitty reviews that slip through the cracks whenever they get the chance. Sure, there's a few bad reviewers here and there, but there's LOADS of great, entertaining, descriptive writers (failsafeman, ANationalAcrobat, droneriot, Noktorn, BastardHead, oneyoudontknow, just to name a few) and the good Far outweighs the bad. Don't even try to tell me SoM has no shitty writers. You're judging this by the best of SoM and the worst of M-A, which is a completely biased and wrong way to go about it.

I have no idea why you even thought this was a valid point.

M-A has one too. It's called the forums.

M-A's got a search function that works incredibly well to find bands that you're looking for, if you know how to use it.70's doom metal? plug that in and you'll get all the bands that formed in 1970-1979 that played doom. Black Metal with lyrical themes revolving around Pagan folklore? Same deal.

Oh, and in case all this wasn't enough, M-A is COMPLETELY renovating their website with M-A v2.0 (it's in beta testing right now) which completely solves any minor issues the old site had.

Oh, and the community there, once you look past the drooling fuckwits that frequent any forum, are full of knowledgeable, insightful people with great knowledge of the genre and remarkable intelligence in many other fields, as many of them have hobbies outside of metal. I've made many friends there and might even be meeting up with a few people I've met there at this year's Maryland Deathfest. Not only that, but it attracts some pretty cool people: Mark Shelton of Manilla Road has posted there, Tom from Lich King has too, as has the guitarist of Warbringer, I Saw one guy from Vektor there too, and a guy from Alestorm frequents the place as LordOminous.

Really, there's no competition.

Then why are you still here ?

Just because I like my Agalloch shirt more than my Sepultura shirt doesn't mean I won't ever wear the latter. I'm not saying SoM is bad, M-A is just better.

Metal Archives is just too elitist for me. Spirit of Metal seems Far more diverse. though i will admit, having to translate all the pages from French to English is a bit of a Pain in the ass

Adds make sites look legit and how do you think SoM got so good. Not by donations. Also, what kind of person thinks that plain black and Red go well together.

Thats not what I meant 0

I mean its very hard to track back and their forums are like a maze

I managed to get one of my reviews up on there so they aren't as harsh or strict as what people seem to make them out to be. Also I guess they do have some entertaining ones there, but there are entertaining ones here aswell.

What are you talking about, I think M-A isn't something to sneeze at. They do have a pretty good setup there. I just think that SoM's one is better.

the last thing M-A needs is more stuff on their forums and its not exactly the most effecient way the do this.

I do like their Idea of having the system of searching for bands that are in the 90's or when their lyrical themes were, that what is really good about M-A. I have a Hard Time searching for bands of a specific genre. Say I were to press search by genre and clicked on Death Metal. It cramms all of the subgenres in there as well such as melodic death and deathcore. When I seach Deathcore, it comes up with 400+ results but I have to wad through pages with 50 results on them

ok true, but thats like that on every metal forum you go to. There is atleast 1 metal guru.

Everybody who thinks M-A is elitist is retarded. So they don't like your favorite band. Big deal. The only thing elitism boils Down to is "hey they don't like what I like"

Oh, and mini, that noose thing was a joke, and if I do say so, it's funny as Hell

funny you think that black and Red don't go together, I was at a store with a girl today and i picked out a shirt for her in those very colors. It looked fucking hot so you can shut up

I could break Down and reply to everything you said, but I've learned from the past, it'll just go in circles. I'll just say that a lot of the issues you have with M-A can simply be attributed to you using this website more often and not being used to M-A's search functions and whatnot, but then again, the same could be said about me and SoM so whatever. They're both useful tools for finding bands and good databases, let's leave it at that.

Who's the "guru" here, though?

Hehe, that sounds more like /mu/

The metal archives forum is awesome. I don't post on there at the moment, but it is a good forum. I do prefer this one though. And regarding the layout of MA, the colour of the site is very appealing to me (I love crimson and black).

Anyway, if I were to choose which site were better, it may boil Down to the Metal Archives.

Metal Archives pros and cons

Pros:

Looks good

I like the way they choose the genres for the bands. Take Lamb Of God and Pantera for example. Metal Archives says Lamb Of God is Groove Metal/Metalcore Spirit of Metal says Deathcore Metal Archives says Pantera is Glam/Heavy Metal (early) Groove Metal (later) Spirit of Metal says Power Metal

No adverts

Has a better search

Cons:

Doesn't allow Industrial, Nu, or Deathcore bands

The forum is unfriendly

The website doesn't always load

Spirit of Metal pros and cons

Pros:

SoM isn't so picky about what's not metal and what is

Band pages have videos

Friendly forum

Website always loads and fast

SoM like M-A also has a good look to it

Cons:

Choosing a genre for a band in SoM sucks, You can only choose one genre per band! that's shitty when many bands Cross over into other genres or completely change genre all together.

Not enough genres to choose from, where's Groove Metal and Southern Metal

All in all I like both sites and visit them both a lot, but because Metal Archives is more accurate then it gets my vote, (just).
