The beginning of this album still freaks me out. It begins calm and then turns into an alien-esque batshit Insane flurry of atmosphere. Te band themselves try to use as much sound and Insanity to create an atmosphere of nothingness, and they truly succeeded. This whole album is monstrous, from the horrific shrieks by the three band members to the riffs. The riffs are perfect for this. They are technical, they aren't soulful, they are Soulless and fast, but since the atmosphere is supposed to feel empty, it's perfect. Sure they used a drum machine, but could you get the same atmosphere (or consistency in speed) from a real drummer? Nope. This album is recommended for lovers of harsh Black Metal, ambient Black Metal or even just dark ambient.
Quite a long album also (80 minutes/hour and 20 minutes).
This album is the definition of deranged. Mark Edward Astorian's ability to create an atmosphere in music is almost unmatched. The atmosphere is suffocating and endless. Every instrument, while still playing in a harsh Death Metal style, are all very hypnotizing. And the vocals... they aren't right. No vocal effects are used on the vocals. The vocals, no matter how disgusting, Deranged or demonic, are all real. But the album isn't completely about the atmosphere; the riffs on the album are fantastic. Moments on the album are so strange that I still get goosebumps hearing them (e.g.: 8:45 of the song below). And even though everything is so experimental and strange, you'd think that it is disjointed, but the whole album flows seamlessly.
Recommended for fans of progressive Death Metal or black metal.
The first post-metal band and their Magnum opus. This thing is the Soundtrack to the apocalypse. Nothing, I mean, Nothing on this album is uplifting; everything on this album is depressing and monstrous. All of this Means one thing is massive on this album: the atmosphere. At some moments, the atmosphere makes you feel dead it's so powerful. All in all, the entire album is perfect, but one track stands out. Locust Star. You have to hear the song to understand why. The album art is amazing also.

Mercenarion says : I love how I'm flooding this thread.
I love how ive posted a decent, (hopefully) never ending thread. My whole idea of a good thread is to have it continuously filling with news etc. Ironic ha, with Comment on underground metal thread and how that crashed and burned. Im boasting a bit here so i think ill rack off now.

I'm just surprised you guys have so many flawless albums. I have three, maybe four tops. You guys have some low standards.
If you are a false, don't entry, or you'll be burned and died!

I do too, but there's a difference between a really great album and a flawless one. "Flawless" in and of itself pretty much Means I can listen to every single second of the album and absolutely love every second of it. Sure, there are albums without any actual BAD parts, but that's not a flawless album to me. Every single second has to be perfect to my ears.
Maybe that's the same for you, I dunno, maybe you just like more stuff and I'm rather picky.

Ihsahn's After is, to me, a flawless album. Fair enough the saxophone (if it is a sax) might get annoying to some, but i actually love it. The songs Barren Lands, Undercurrent and On the shores sound Sick with the sax. The start of On the shores with the sax is an example. I cant quite put it in words. But it's something i really like about their music. Sometimes change is good, and this is a prime example.

Bath - maudlin of the Well
One of the most emotional pieces of music to ever exist. Every song is unique, ranging from the calmness of Heaven and Weak to the insanely strange Death Metal monster that is They Aren't All Beautiful. Toby Driver's vocals are perfect for the music, whether he be doing calm, emotional vocals or amazing growls, they all fit in. The entire album is extremely progressive in every aspect, yet it never seems pretentious. The atmosphere is otherworldly and haunting, yet oddly uplifting at the same time. The lyrics are poetic Genius, Nothing I can say Beyond this.
