To me, any genre of music can be broken
Down into two components: composition and delivery. Allow me to elaborate further:
Composition is basically the "technical" part of the music and everything that has to do with it, be it pitch, dynamic, speed (or lack thereof), song structure etcetera. Sheet music is composition in its purest, rawest form, as it has no method of delivery and is just technical instructions on how to play a song.
Delivery is the method in which you play these notes, the emotion that is behind them, the "texture" of the song. Without the correct texture, metal probably wouldn't be called
Heavy Metal, as heaviness is a method delivery.
Now, my question is: Which
Element is more valuable to the genre of metal? I mean, you can have bands like
Triptykon, who have a really good vibe going and have a friggin gnarly guitar tone but can't write a good riff to save their lives and the music suffers because of it. Then there's bands like
Necrophagist or
Yngwie Malmsteen, who have incredible, mindblowing melodies but are so stale and flat in their delivery that the music doesn't trigger any emotional response from me. On
The One hand, bands like
Manilla Road or
Amon Amarth wouldn't be so damn good if they didn't have boatloads of epic riffs, on the other hand,
Slayer, Iron Maiden and pretty much every thrash band in
Existence would suck if their music was played by robots. Don't believe me? just listen to 8-bit renditions of
Slayer and Maiden songs, they suck ass.
I'm pretty much on the fence for this one, honestly. What do you guys think?
If you are a false, don't entry, or you'll be burned and died!
