Haven't heard it yet; my vinyl still hasn't come in the mail. I won't listen to it on youtube; I'm only going to hear it when it comes in.

I've only heard the song Budstikken off it (I couldn't resist), and I thought the song was friggin awesome. Probably better than anything off Belus.

4 comments in and I've heard Nothing about how the album sounds. If you haven't heard it yet, why bother telling everybody that?

Anyways, I actually HAVE heard some tunes off it, and it's alright. Sounds like a slightly more developed version of "Belus", really, and neither bear any resemblance to (or are anywhere near as good as) the older material. The clean vocals really give me a "viking metal" vibe- don't know if that's what he intended, but it only half works.

It gets an enthusiastic "meh" from me.

I can agree that it isn't what the old stuff is... there seems to be some genre progression. You're right; Fallen does sound viking-ish, but not only in the vocals... some of the riffs have a Viking metal quality to them too. I find that Filosofem, Belus, and Fallen all tie in together, they have a lot of similarities in them... Only thing is that Filosofem had keyboards. I don't know about the rest of you, but I still miss those keyboards. Another song like Tomhet would be perfect on Fallen, I think.

I don't think his "post-prison" albums sound anything like his classic albums for a couple of reasons. One, before he was imprisoned, he was a lot more straightforward and blunt with his views (like any young'un is) and because of that, the music was a lot less forgiving, a lot less pandering to the listener- you're not gonna see any 25-minute ambient tracks on the new albums like you did on Filosofem. Second, despite what he wants to think, his music has evolved a little bit and has been given a bit of a modern Black Metal vibe, be it intentionally or unintentionally- case in point, the clean vocals, they reminded me a lot of the new Enslaved, actually- and while he hasn't managed to stagnate as much as a lot of other artists have, there has been a bit of dilution in his sound.
Oh, and the production's a lot better- that kind of detracts from it.

I think the production is better and worse... in The One hand it isn't as Distorted and you can hear everything seperately, but it sounds... tight and constricted, I guess. The atmosphere feels limited. In Hvis Lyset TAR Oss, the production was a little raspy/grainy, but it reverberated more, and it breathed. The keyboards are probably a big part of that, but even in the stand-alone guitar parts it felt really wide open.

Well I for oner think the album is great. Whilst not being half as good as earlier albums like "Hvis TAR Lyset Oss" or "Det Som Engang Var" it still has a very Burzum feel to it. I would definitely reccomend the album not only for the music but just for the Burzum collection.
