Subhuman (en)

Killer riffs, powerful voice, stunning solos and earthshaking drumming for nine songs of moshing strength, this all you can find on the newest Subhuman album Profondo Rozzo! Matteo, the guitarist, and what is even more important, the composer of the thras death metal band was willing to answer a few questions.

interview SubhumanHow would you present Subhuman to someone who has never heard of your music?
Subhuman are a Thrash-Death Metal band from Italy who sing in italian. We published a demo in 2005 called “Delirio n°1” and now, after some line up changes, we published our first full lenght “Profondo Rozzo”: a melting pot between Bay Area Thrash, floridian Death Metal and modern elements. All mixed up with an “ironically pissed” attitude!

as a cover band, have you always wanted to play your own music or was it an idea which developed by time?
Subhuman started up as a totally unpretentious “fun project”. We enjoyed a lot playing covers but, after a couple of years, it was time to write our own stuff so... here we are!

What does the word Subhuman personally means to you and why did you choose it as a name for your band?
I choose “Subhuman” as monicker for my band essentially because it sound good, it’s easy to remember and it gives an idea of the music we play. No particular personal means... even if the word “subhuman” could be easily related to our screamer Zula.

No to your recent album Profondo Rozzo – Are you content with the result? Could you characterize the album?
?“Profondo Rozzo” is our baby! It took 4 years of hard work, and we done everything possible to realize the most professional album we could. We’re totally glad of the results! The production, the songs, the artwork, the lyrics, the musicians performace... everything is great! “Profondo Rozzo” came out as we wanted: powerful, technical, fast, wide ranging: nothing t
interview Subhumanotally new, but I like to think to it as a very personal album. We are Subhuman, no more a cover band!

The lyrics themes are pretty wide. Where do you look for inspiration and how long does it take you to create a complete song from a first idea?
I write every Subhuman note and the creation of a whole song is a very long process. I’m a maniac and a song is not finished until it sounds PERFECT to my ears. After I wrote the music, Zula take care of lyrics. He’s simply inspired from all the things that go up around him and, despite of me, he’s very fast to write the whole lyrics...

Your demo Delirio n° 1 was a big success. Are you anticipating the same amount of good reviews on your newest album as well?
The album is out since 2 weeks so, by now, it received 4 reviews only. But all are excellent! And fans too seem to appreciate the album... We hope to receive more great reviews than “Delirio n°1”!

How did you enjoy recording of it? Was it very different from recording your demo?
The recording of “Profondo Rozzo” was totally different from”Delirio n°1” one! The demo was recorded by me at my home studio: the sound was good, but nothing compared to the new album: we recorded “Profondo Rozzo” at Studio73, one of the best recording studios for Metal here in Italy. The sound speaks by himself!

Looking back in time, what is your opinion about Delirio n° 1? Is there anything you would change?
?“Delirio n°1” is a great demo, in my opinion. I still enjoy songs like “ Il Vecchio bastardo” or “Vilgiaccheria”. Today
interview Subhuman i would change drum sounds and some arrangement, but it was THE BEST we could do at that time, so it’s ok... I’m really, really glad of that cd.

What are the band’s plans for future? Any tour or next album?
Our new album is out now ad we want to promote it with as many concerts as possible. We’re scheduling some dates in italy but nothing abroad. We say to european promoters: call us!!! We’re also composing some new stuff, but we have 3 new songs only... it’s a little bit soon now to speak about the new album.

If you could choose any bands to share a stage with or go to a tour, which would they be and why?
Slayer, Testament, Meshuggah, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Cannibal Corpse: our greatest inspirations!

You also participate in other bands and projects. Could you tell more about them?
Sure, the only Subhuman members who play in other projects are me and Francesco (drums). I play also in an instrumental prog metal duo called The Aesthetic Project (check it out on http://www.myspace.com/theaestheticproject) while Francesco play with many bands: Kiju (thrash core), Valentine (Hard Rock), Mistyland (Power Metal) and Discordia (Prog Metal).

How would you convince somebody to go to your concert?
We kill you with our sound while we’re entertaining you! Good music, alcohol, some bullshit... what else?

Anything you would like to add to your potential fans?
Yes. Hurry up to come to a Subhuman show and buy our album, cause the Armageddon will come in 2012. HORNS UP!
