Pig Destroyer (VO)

Formed in 97 when vocalist J.R. Hayes and guitarist Scott Hull united their destructive forces to create THE ultimate grindcore band, Pig Destroyer quickly signed on Relapse records. It was unavoidable. 'Explosions In Ward 6', then 'Prowler In The Yard' & the absolutely great 'Terrifyer' albums are already highlights for lovers of incendiary music mixing grind, thrash and punk. Now here’s 'Phantom Limb' for you grind freaks. This is Scott Hull who answered my few questions in may 2007.

interview Pig Destroyer>Hail to the mighty Destroyer of Pigs ! I just received your 4th & brand new album from Relapse. Is this following list of adjectives is ok for you : intense, primitive, fast, furious, uncompromising & NOISY !!! How can you describe it to our readers ?
I think that's a pretty good description of what we were going for... I would've maybe thrown in 'pissed off'...

>'Terrifyer' was one of the best records i heard in 2004. I don’t already know if 'Phantom Limb' is so good (didn’t listen enough yet) but i must say i find it maybe more classic in a way. Very brutal, more technical also, but with some grinding parts reminding me of the godly Napalm Death. A perfect mix between old & new-styled grindcore. Are you agree ?
We were definitely feeling the thrash vibe on this record, but I don't think anybody can write a grindcore record and not be influenced by Napalm. Carcass is the same way. They were definitely an influence on this record. Their riffs are so slimy, so demented. I'd like to think we've got a little bit of our own sound mixed in there too...

>This time, some of your songs are also longer. There are only 14 trax instead of more than 20. Let’s tell us how did you compose this new album. Did you work differently than usual ? How does Pig Destroyer’s decomposing process looks like ?
Usually we record everything ourselves, but this time we booked time in a 'real' studio. So we knew we'd have to have everything well rehearsed. It gave the songs a chance to develop in a live setting. I think that's why the songs are a little bit longer maybe... They're more like drawings than sketches if you know what I mean...

>Which studio did you record this new album in ? I read that you didn’t use bass-guitar on this one. Why ? Technically i’d like to know how did you achieve this powerful & groovy sound ?
We recorded it at Omega studios in Rockville, M
interview Pig Destroyeraryland. There's no bass guitar on the album, but we did pitch shift one of the guitar tracks down a whole octave, so it kind of sounds like there is a bass in there. We were just messing around with the pitch shifter and we thought it sounded heavy as fuck, so we kept it in.

>Now you’re 4 in the line-up. Why did you decide to work with Blake Harrison ? Where does he come from ?
Blake is an old friend and a veteran of the Baltimore hardcore scene. He used to be in Daybreak and Triac. We were looking for someone to do some live noise/samples and we just decided to make him a full time member of the band. He had already been with us on our last few mini-tours, so it was just a natural fit.

>Lyrically speaking, your song titles seems very violently engaged. What are the topics you deal with ? Is there some metaphors about the society we live in, or only some pure violent acts like some people being dismembered & all that shits ?
I can't even keep my own head straight half the time... how am I going to comment on 'society'? I guess I can't relate to that... I just try to write stuff that I feel, that I think is honest... and for some reason I think using really violent, disturbing imagery makes me 'cool' or something. I really have no idea.

>Explain us the use of this strange medical title 'Phantom Limb'. Is there a kind of connection with Pig Destroyer ? Any missing things who hurts you ?
Scott felt strongly about 'Phantom Limb'... album titles are like band names, you have to come up with 100 shitty ones before the right one comes up. It just felt right... it sounded right.

>Each of your cover-artworks are great. Past ones are violently explicit but for this new one, you changed of visual universe. It’s still morbid but with a touch of psychedelism also. Who’s the guy who drawned it ?
His name is John Baizley. He sings for the band Barone
interview Pig Destroyerss. The cover of 'Terrifyer' is one of my all time favorites, but for this record I wanted a different vibe... Different colors, more of a psychedelic thing. I'd been a fan of John's stuff for a long time, so I thought he would do something very striking, very different from what we'd done in the past. I think every record should have it's own identity, you know what I mean?

>Will you tour Europe soon ? Any plans for France or Belgium ? Do you appreciate european bands you would like to play with ? How does a show of Pig Destroyer look like ?
Rotten Sound are my absolute favorite europeans. They just might be the sickest grindcore band in the world right now. I just missed their set in Baltimore the other day though... I totally suck. Of course we want to tour Europe, but we take our time man... we'll wait until the time is ripe... I would love to play France. I'd love to meet french Pig Destroyer fans, that would be sweet.

>Scott, you’re also famous for playing with Agoraphobic Nosebleed. Can we get some fresh informations about this band’s future ?
I think they've got a split with Apartment 213 coming out... But I've also heard some stuff from the new album and it's totally out of control. It's slower and there's two bass guitars and the drum programming is just twisted man... The grooves are just sick.

>Did you see the Zodiac movie, David Fincher’s last film about one of US serial-killers who had never been arrested ? A pretty fascinating story.
I didn't see the movie but I read the book. It is a very fascinating story... If only for the fact that he was never caught. There's still so much mystery attached to it. The codes, the costumes, the taunting of the police... Truth really is stranger than fiction.

>Well thanx for your time & answers, last words are yours.
Thanks man. Cheers. www.pigdestroyer.net www.relapse.com
