Hi Nicke, really cool to see you back to the darkside of metal ! To begin this interview, please tell us about your envy to go back to your roots. Why did you decide to form Death Breath ? Is playing real death-metal something you needed for a long time ? Fed up with rock'n'roll ? I had quite a long break from metal after leaving Entombed. Now it seems the metal battery is recharged and I'm spitting out riffs again. It was just time I suppose. I never get fed up with rock & roll. Remember that without Chuck Berry you'd have no Chuck Shuldiner.
Who are the other 2 guys playing in Death Breath ? Why did you choose them ? Please, introduce them ?
Me and Robert Pehrsson (he's played with DeathWitch and Runemagick among others) are the ones in charge of the band so to speak. We write the songs. Magnus Hedquist (Ruthless Mausoleum and Grinderbitch) is the bass player. Last year me & Robert decided to form a death-metal band together. A little later we asked Magnus to join.
Is it possible to know why you leave Entombed during the 'To Ride, Shoot Straight ' tour in 97 ?
I left Entombed for a lot of reasons. One of 'em being that I was fed up after playing together for 10 years. And like I said the metal battery was flat. I didn't leave in the middle of a tour though. I very much fullfilled my duties.
Death Breath's first album 'Stinkin' Up The Night' will soon be released on Black Lodge. This
is death-metal in its purest form, with a great punk touch inside. Bands like Repulsion, Autopsy & Nihilist automatically comes to mind when hearing these songs. How would you define these songs with your own words ? I would define Death Breath as death-metal. There's nothing more to it and that's the beauty of it. We're keeping it simple. I need a little punk in my metal.
Please tell us about its recording process (where/when/who.) ? Was it a cool experience in the studio ? I heard there are a lot of guest appearances, who are they ?
The album was recorded in Acetone studio in Stockholm around february some time. We finished it later in april I think. It took around a week to record I guess. Not sure. We got Jörgen Sandström from Grave, Entombed, Vicious art etc... to sing on 3 songs. So did Scott Carlson of Repulsion. We're big fans. Turned fine indeed. We also got Fred Estby to perform one his infamous Tom Araya screams.
Are there some differences between the Death Breath composition process & the way it happens in The Hellacopters ? Because i find both bands really impulsive & wild.
No, I write songs the same way no matter what kind of style. I sit down with the guitar and hope for the best. Sometimes it works, sometimes it don't. In a sense I guess you can call it impulsive. It's not very thought out.
Lets' talk about the lyrics. Are they focused on old-fashioned topics (gore imagery & occultism) or did you write
them in a more mature way ?I'm not sure the word 'mature' is in place here but of course that depends on who's reading the lyrics. I find them very enjoyable. Topics ? How about overwhelmingly bad breath, war, Armageddon, Satan and zombies. You know, all good stuff.
Will you tour with Death Breath soon ? What do you think about this Masters Of Death Tour in next november including Entombed + Grave + Dismember + Unleashed ? Would you like to be added on the list ?
We're playing a gig in Sockholm in october. We'll have to see how that goes. Time will tell. Sure, opening up for those cats would be very nice. It don't seem very likely though.
What do you think about the last Entombed EP 'When In Sodom' which sounds really agressive. A song like 'Carnage' for instance seems like a death-metal come-back. Did you hear it ?
Yeah, I dig the EP a lot. I don't find it too different from 'Inferno' or 'Morning Star' though. The last Entombed records have been very good if you ask me and that's exactly what you're doing. Entombed's been kicking ass for a long time before this EP.
Do you know some french death-metal bands who kicked your ass these last months ? This torture seance is finished, last words are yours, thanx for your time !
No, my ass doesn't seem sore at all. Last time a french death-metal band kicked my ass was Mutilated in the late eighties I'm afraid. I need to be updated. Thanks for the inteview!
