Well of Souls was formed in December of 1997 by guitarist Brandon Johnson and vocalist John Calvin in an attempt to simply have a good time. They quickly decided that they wanted to play a rather uncommon style of metal known as doom, (picture the song “Black Sabbath” by Black Sabbath), and so they began by following their mentors Solitude Aeturnus, Candlemass, and Black Sabbath among others. They played and wrote a variety of original tunes and covers over the next year and a half until they realized that not only had their musicianship grown but that the music had progressed past what they had started out as. After a number of line-up changes their quest ended when in came one of John's former drummers, Raymond Matthews. Within a week they found the fourth and final bassist they had been looking for all along, Tim Wayne. All the old songs were scrapped and the band spent the next eight months writing and recording their original five-song demo CD, the now out-of-print and sought after “Black Reign Demo”. The release received a warm welcome by metal fans and industry personnel alike, including John Perez of Solitude Aeturnus/Brainticket Records who has expressed great interest in working with the band on their future releases. Well of Souls then added a second guitarist to the mix and began melding doom with European progressive/power metal and classic metal, and in the process sound modern with an obvious harkening back to the old school metal that true hard rock fans yearn for. The band refers to themselves as “Dark Metal” and have been compared to everything from Mercyful Fate to Iron Maiden to Blind Guardian, as they employ a crushing guitar sound with progressive drumming and John's very unique, clean vocal style. As the band's sound changed they decided it was time to change up the lineup and so Tim switched over to the lead guitar spot with Brandon and Well of Souls began the search for their new bassist (which continues to this day!). Friend John Morris currently fills in that position when the band performs live. In early 2003 the band began to record their official debut CD after months of arduous demo recording. The self-titled disc will be released in late summer worldwide on Brainticket Records. Drum tracks are being recorded at the bands rehearsal studio and the remaining music will be done at Federal Reserve Studios in North Houston. Immediately following the recordings the band will begin their live assault once again while crafting songs for the second CD and a possible live EP. The band's solid playing has continued to destroy stages everywhere they play with their creative show and stage production that creates the mood of the music perfectly using candelabras and dark lighting with John's incredibly energetic and maniacal stage presence. As they progress, they have developed a style that is very much their own, and instantly recognizable to their ever-growing fan base, and their live shows are quickly gaining notoriety among the Houston metal scene. In fact they have garnered enough attention to pull coveted shows with international recording artists Savatage, Fates Warning, Seven Witches, Omen, Steel Prophet, Helstar, Destiny's End, & Solitude Aeturnus.
