Like venturing into a forbidding, haunted, modern Gothic castle in the middle of a windy night

Many like to compare Schwarzer Engel with Rammstein. My personal opinion is that while there are hints of industrial metal influences in their songs, Schwarzer Engel is a different beast from Rammstein. Rammstein is pure raw power that pumps one’s heart into full gear mode and makes one charge forward with ferocity. Schwarzer Engel’s music is way more complex, melodic and artistic with excellent arrangements, especially on the orchestral side. This album, among Schwarzer Engel's lineup, best demonstrates the musical differences between the two bands.

Listening to the album Träume Einer Nacht is like venturing into a forbidding, haunted, modern Gothic castle in the middle of a windy night. The castle looks impossibly beautiful, being adorned with intricate, finely crafted motifs, cravings and statues. Though the overwhelmingly ominous aura of the vengeful spirits hung over the place. Those spirits are graceful and beautiful, seeking to lure many into their arms. No, they are hardly as kind as they look. They will torment their victims in a way that toggles between pleasure and horror.

The first song, “In tiefster Nacht” is kind of like that eerie-looking door of the castle, leading one into the chambers of nightmares. “Geister und Dämonen” is a grand song with an opera vibe, but the lack of built-up and variations makes this a relatively safe but quite uneventful part of the tour. The next one “Fieber im Blut” is more aggressive and built up the momentum nicely. The problem with this song is the chorus, which is repetitive, so it did not rub off very well on me. “Halb Gott” is the first of the lineup to truly showcase the talents of the composer. The electronic music gives a modern vibe while dancing in perfect harmony with the tunes of classical instruments and rawness of the metal sounds.

“In Zwei Geteilt” is a melancholic song full of restrained sorrow and one of the few without the harsh vocals. Could almost felt those statues in the castle weeping blood when this song is played. “Sonnenanbeterin” is a masterpiece that starts off brilliantly with fast and furious classical music with metal music in the background, followed by the melodic, soothing tone. The excellent part comes in the built-up where the harsh vocals come in, going to the point where it exploded into the glorious chorus. The next song “Lebendig Begraben” is a departure from the lighter mood of the previous song, descending into the deep underground filled with an ancient evil. The atmosphere becomes less malevolent with “Königin der Nacht”‘ but still dense and overpowering nonetheless. This is song that gets everything right with a hypnotic start that is easy on the ears, sinister built-up and opera-like chorus. “Tanzende Schatten” tends to be quite repetitive in terms of tune, so this is more like a transition song to the best part of the exploration.

The next instrumental song is like a passageway to the most brilliant, breath-taking and exciting views of the castle. “Träume Einer Nacht” is alsolutely haunting beautiful and romantic song with a slow yet gravitating melody that opens way to a ethereal chorus filled with rich emotions of longing. The fast music performed on the violins heightened the unreal balance between serenity and tension. The vocals with the brittle quality works excellently here. After this, one will be grabbed into the throne room of terror by “Vom Galgan tönt die Krähe” that takes one on a roller-coaster ride. Extremely heavy on the medieval feel, there is a great number of layers of music at work here to create an absolutely brutal, adrenaline-inducing song that sends the listener on the high and wanting to listen to it again and again to immerse oneself in the blood-soaked world. After the whirlwind of emotions induced by the previous two, the last one, seemingly slower song “Wiegenlied” injects the last dose of sensory overload. The utterly sorrowful, other-worldly melody, accompanied by the rich orchestral music tugs at one’s heart till long after it ends.

An album that successfully combines beauty and horror.
