Review @ Onni

27 Mai 2009
Italian band with female vocals composes music in the modern vein: musicians try to combine different styles of metal music. The band has quite short history: formed in 2007, in 2008 the first demo was released, and now in 2009 they have the full-length debut album “The Nightlitany” out.

I should admit that it’s a good debut. The band has managed to combine different styles very gently, naturally and confidently. The album starts with the soft intro of the symphonic kind, but it releases into the wild and intense “Suffocating Night” with some kind of mix of classic power metal and melodic death metal. Here we meet the first vocals: harsh voice of the frontwoman Marta and growls and screams by guitarist Lorenzo and bass-player Francesco. So far this music is full of melodies, guitars dominate (there are no official keyboard player in the band, but of course they have some key’s lines on the album). The music is not straight, different parts change each other and overall it looks interesting. The band uses manifold vocals, although you can’t call it perfect, neither can you call it bad. Marta and her friends have just more to learn.

The next “Archway of Stars” shows another side of the band: in the beginning it’s a ballad and Marta sings in clean vocals. Here are more folk tunes, acoustic guitars and percussion, but then the song turns to the heavier form and then transforms to some kind of folk dance, very nice and cheerful, and ends in the veins of power metal. Despite these changes, the song is a bit too long. “The Afternoon of a Faun” consists of 2 parts: short instrumental prelude and “Dreams of Nymphs”. It’s quite short acoustic folk song where Marta sings again softly and gently. So you can expect that the next “Ambiguous Greeds” will be intense, powerful and rhythmic. Yes, it is, with growls, choirs, rush, tempo changes, bright guitar riffs, interesting solos. If these Italians will continue in the same vein, I guess the next album will be brilliant!.. The last song “Dewforged Fairy” is a very long, 8 minutes, epic song of the same kind: here you will again find calm acoustic parts and intense “metal” thick parts, lots of melodies and solos.

The CD has the great booklet in black, white and green colours with all the lyrics, credits, photos, nice pictures. It matches with the content of the CD perfectly. In sum, the album is very energetic, with the good production, good performance, and good ideas. It’s worth attention of those who like power and folk, female vocals in metal, mixing of different styles.
