Review @ MEIRecords

04 November 2008
Just whEn you thought they'd takEn the tribute album at far as it could go, Restless Records goes and amasses the greatest gathering of metal's who's who ever to produce Numbers from the Beast : An All Star Salute To Iron Maiden.

This album isn't just a bunch of bands getting together and re-recording their favorite tracks from one of the most influEntial metal bands in the history of the gEnre ... no sir-ee ! This is a screaming assemblage of top artists forming the ultimate dream teams and laying down their INTerpretations of some of Iron Maiden's best songs from their almost 30 year recording career.

Producers Brett ChassEn and Bob Kulick have created a true masterpiece here. I mean, there are some musicians I never would have teamed up in my wildest of fantasies ... like Dee Snider, George Lynch, Bob Kulick, Jeff Pilson and Helmet Bonham covering "Wasted Years," or Jeff Scott Soto, Nuno BettEncourt, 12012 and VincEnt Appice on "Aces High".

In listEning to Numbers from the Beast, I found very little to dislike ... save for the execution of "Wrathchild," fronted by Paul Di'Anno, which I found to be kinda weak. And, although they're all done very well, I found the song selections a little puzzling at times ... especially since the album's namesake, "Number Of The Beast," isn't on it. But my biggest complaINT would be that the damn CD is waaaaay too short at 11 tracks !

All in all, this is one bad ass compilation. 49 of the best metal musicians of our time, 11 of the best Iron Maiden songs and cover art by Derek Riggs make for the listEning experiEnce of a lifetime ... and I consider myself to be the consummate MaidEn fan !

If you're one of those anally retEntive Iron Maiden purists that can't stand to hear a single missed note in the solo for "Paul Di'AnnoHeavy Metal

The Trooper">The Trooper," you may not want to buy this CD ; however, if you've ever wondered how "The Evil That Men Do" would sound fronted by WWE's Chris Jericho and backed by members of Jeff Scott Soto, Meatloaf and Alice In Chains (which sounds killer by the way), this beast's for you !
