Review @ GandhiEgo

01 März 2010
It took Animals Killing People four years to release their sophomore release and their first full-length aggression. In 2004, when they released the EP Human Hunting Season, most underground fans raved about its pure aggression and its DIY feel. The EP sold quite fast and was subsequently re-released with a Bolt Thrower cover making it even more revered in the underground.

In 2008, Sevared Records signed the band which consisted at the time of Manuel Quique and Wilson Rairan respectively on guitar/bass and drums. Just like for Human Hunting Season, AKP did not have a stable singer and no doubt this weighed on the band to release something newer. For Kentucky Fried Killing, they recruited two friends of theirs to handle the vocals. Justin Boehm from Canada's Orchidectomy and Sebastian Guarin from former band Purulent (who in my opinion does a much better job than Boehm).

So four years have passed. What’s new? What's old? Well this is a freaking long time for a “younger” band and I'm pretty sure most people had given up on AKP releasing anything new at all. There were short-lived bands like Cinerary or Incestuous that did too release a single EP just to go in flames a short time after but then when Sevared announced the first AKP full-length, hopes were high and so were doubts.

The good news about Kentucky Fried Killing is that AKP's method hasn't changed a bit. It's an all out aggression from start to finish. Brutal Death Grind is what you had in 2004 and what you get in 2008. Why would you change something so sweet?

Though it’s not specified in the CD booklet, you can tell that tracks were recorded over a certain period of time for some of them display various levels of production. You may find yourseld wanting to skip the first two tracks because the production here really sucks, drumming is so crappy it almost is on par with the toilet-disgorging vocals and it's a rather weird experience. When I first played the CD I thought to myself that they got an even crappier production than on the EP (which was definitely a prominent feature). Fortunately, only the first two tracks “benefit” from this “production” and the remaining ten tracks are a lot more satisfying.

It’s still a mess of riffing and intestinal vocals but compared to Human Hunting Season and thanks to a less messy production, you can tell that AKP is evolving in the right direction. Oh it’s not Opeth or Origin and never will be, but the songs are better structured and yet keep this crushing intensity found in their first release.

If you enjoyed the intros of the first EP, you will love the new ones. I mean rats killing men, spiders killing men or bears killing men is what you may expect. These guys love animals, and you can tell. I know some people that are fed up with B/Z-classics intros but I’m not! So if you’re into bands like Mortician or Impetigo, you'll definitely enjoy AKP.

Talking about Mortician, add a bit of Bolt Thrower heaviness and a bit of Brodequin’s fury and you’ll get a pretty good picture of AKPs music on their sophomore release.

Now that they stabilized the lineup with the addition of vocalist Eston Browne, I certainly hope that we’re not going to wait till 2012 to see the birth of AKP’s next brutal offering. Que sera, sera. In the meantime, enjoy Kentucky Fried Killing!
