Average but Groovy Metalcore

Relatively new metalcore band Church Hill from Melbourne releases their first record "Intricacies". The first release is always crucial for a band because it is what gets a name out there and catches the attention of labels and sets in stone the beginnings of a band. The stive for metalcore greatest in which Church Hill is attempting to achieve may take a while. The overall outlook on the album is very average. However, there are a lot of details that have added points and taken them away.

The overall musicianship is nothing more than average. It's just like every other metalcore band with at least 3-5 breakdowns a song and every now and then a nice moving riff like the ones in the second track "Texture". However bland the music might be, in some parts the breakdowns are very groovy but somewhat generic. The opening track "Orpheus" shows the listener a very groovy side of the band and the breakdowns are nice to mosh and move around to.

The instrumentals are in fact very average but they have their shining moments. The guitars, as stated earlier, create very groovy breakdowns and in songs such as the the third track "Aberration" where they create very melodious riffs and chord progressions. Other than that the guitars are pretty bland and uniteresting. The drummer has talent and shows some of it but he seems to use the same template everytime. If there is a breakdown he just follows the guitar's down strokes. During the verses and everywhere else that isn't a breakdown, he just creates a back beat to correspond with the guitars. The bass is just kind of there... I think. The listener can't really hear the bassist play but you can tell he is there because the music isn't lacking in bass.

The vocalist in Church Hill has potential, but he needs to work on it. His lows are brutal and a great deathcore type growl that can shatter bones and crush skulls. On the opposite end of the spectrum, his high screeches need some practice and work. The listener can tell he is hitting the highs but he it sounds very scratchy and not very good. With time the vocalist can be a powerhouse in the world of Australian metalcore.

Though this record is very ordinary and average it gives Church Hill a lot of room for improvement and room to grow on. This album may have been an average and bland album but it is the rock that the band will stand on for the rest of their hopefully long and successful career. With the instuments practicing and the vocalist working, this band is on its way to metalcore greatness. This record gets an 11/20
