This German band consists of the experienced musicians, so although the band was formed just in 2008 we can expect something interesting and quality. The genre that
Grand Massive plays is called stoner, it’s groove and heavy metal, sometimes you can hear influences from doom metal; some say there’s something from
Black Sabbath here. This music is perfectly balanced, the vocal suits the music, and the name reflects the content: intro and 4 massive songs. The calm but intense acoustic intro “Lugn” opens the EP. The restrained energy and inner strain that comes up in the intro you can feel during all the 5 songs. The problem is that basically all 4 songs (except the “Lugn”) sound in the same vein, minute after minute we hear quite the same tunes.
These German guys actually have everything to catch your attention: drive, melody, good guitar solos, interesting breaks, nice rhythms, tempo changes (this mixture should perfectly work on the concerts!). The sound and overall production is pretty good and solid. Quality of this EP is really high, it’s done at the level, but unfortunately the EP is not so interesting – it’s the problem of many bands. So
Grand Massive can catch your attention, but hardly can keep it. A professional musician is not necessarily a good composer. So let’s wait the album, maybe the band will add something different, new and interesting.
