The last things you heard from South Africa were probably those annoying vuvuzelas and only fans of the late Cradle of Filth might have enjoyed that. Fortunately for us, there is a growing scene out there in Extreme Metal and Bile Of Man may well be their best frontmen.

Formed in 2007 in Pretoria, the band has already made a name there and with their latest and first offering, the EP Dystopian Order: the Age of Detritus, they’re bound to reach more fans outside of South Africa. Bile Of Man play intense Brutal Death Metal. How intense? Hate Eternal intense would be my best pick. There’s barely room for breathing in the half-hour onslaught displayed there.

Still, unlike many bands of the genre that have only mastered the “brutality” part, Bile Of Man also know how to create dark and crude atmospheres which may be revealed on tracks like Feast on the Wicked or The Return with their infernal down (well not that down but you get the picture) tempo parts. It’s also got its fair share of guitar soli which is welcome in a genre that sometimes forgets how to place them adequately in songs.

As far the production is concerned it’s brilliant and the musicianship displayed here is epic and both drumming and guitar riffing kill from start to finish. Amidst the Chaos and its fairly simple chorus ("Die"… how appropriate) show that this release may be the first these guys put out but there’s craft here and bands like Origin would certainly approve. The only instrument that seems to be left behind is the bass guitar but that’s unfortunately a much too common symptom in Metal.

At times, there’s also the strange feeling that the more “melodic” incursions from the guitar add to the band a discrete but yet perceptible Impaled/Engorged touch minus the gory theatricals of those two bands. Most people, including me, have lately complained that the Brutal Death Metal scene was being plagued by wankers without the ability to write a correct song. Bile Of Man proved with their very first EP that they can escape the miasma of lowest-common denominators and rise to the highest standards found out nowadays.

So in case you were wondering what your next Brutal Death Metal purchase could be, it might be wise to check this band out because they do deserve it big time.
