Refreshing and Creative

This is an album that demands several playbacks to fully absorb all of the musical elements within. Who writes a full hour album these days? Driftglass does. Prepare your brain for this one, your musical I.Q. is about to increase.

Right off the bat, Insect In a Jar is a high energy song, a bit on the Pop side but kept in Prog check by powerful vocals, interesting riffage, brilliant harmonies and guitar solos, with a strong finish that sets the stage for the rest of the album.

Next comes Thrown Out to Shore, which really pulls this album into the realm of progressive rock. Everything you want in a song; heavy guitar riffs, subtle tones, creative vocals. Brilliant composition and execution, this song is passionate and complex, worthy of recognition and I just don't get tired of it.

Evelyn, for me, is a questionable addition to the album; definitely pop here, but is still an enjoyable song and the guitar/keys do their best to 'progify' this tune.

Devil of My Dreams picks up where Thrown Out to Shore left off, and cranks the prog level up a few notches. These 2 songs back to back are a killer combination. If you want epic, this is a good song for you. A compendium of riffs, solos and vocal lines that most bands would pull 5 songs out of, this masterpiece keeps me going through all 9 minutes. Stellar vocals and music throughout.

My Last Lament is possibly the most progressive track on this album IMO, still notably Driftglass, with an air of experimentation. This song could go either way depending on your mood. Not my favourite, but it is not without artistic merit.

Next up, chick song extraordinaire. Disconnected is pure, shameless pop music, but I've been to a few Driftglass gigs and it is certainly a crowd-pleaser. Heck, even Yes has a few of those.

With The Rise, the epicness begins in truth, with a trilogy of songs that is enough to forgive the deviations from the genre. Great melodies and recurring themes start you off on a trip you'll want to do over and over again. Here begins the story of man, who is destined to fail in the eyes of these gentlemen.

The Unfolding casts the first feeling of doom on this album, with airs of despair in the vocal lines, quasi psychedelic guitars mingled with heavy classical based progressions. We get treated with a playful divergence from the theme, homage to Brubeck, whom I suppose was an important musical influence. After the Take 5 bit, you're pulled back into the downward spiral, with an onslaught of powerful music and lyrics.

The culmination of this great album is the title track: All That Remains. Truly epic with lyrics bit on the dark side, packed with brilliant composition and recurring themes that keep this song and the trilogy flowing. Again masterfully instrumented, and stellar performances by all.

One last comment on the rhythm section... The constant ups and downs, twists and turns, tempo changes, rhythm changes are for the most part seamless, a testament to the great talent laying the foundation for this music to flourish. Tastefully done at every turn.

All That Remains is for you to listen to this album and enjoy it. If you are in the Toronto area, look out for their upcoming shows, they are a treat to watch.
