I got to know Aghast! When I saw them in Luton. The guitarist, Christiaan was out of this world and such a nice guy too. I kept in touch with them and when their new e.p. came out, even though I understand it hasn't even gone to print yet, he sent me a copy.

The bands previous work, 'A Wolf in the Kingdom of Heaven' (which is a track on this e.p.) was solid, if a little 'thrown together'. The basic songs were still there and still very strong in terms of writing skill. So i'll be honest I expected a lot from this CD...

and it does NOT disappoint.

No Walken quotes this time, we're straight in and what is plainly obvious from the outset is that they had some money to spend this time around! The sound is crisp and as brutal as I have heard in years!

Bang to Rights is a crushing assault, pummelling you riff by riff into submission. Its got some 'core' elements but in this day and age, anything slighty different to trad death is going to sound 'core'. When we get to It's Your Funeral it is clear that these guys are going somewhere, the song is fast paced if a little long (that being my only complaint, is that while they don't feel long while listening; they are very long for a 'live band'), but it contains some seriously beautiful moments. Am I to Have Wings is another seriously solid cut, Lamb of God WISH they could still write songs like this. The riffs, the drums, the bass and the vocals are just the most aggressive, visceral and downright brutal i've heard... and i hadn't even got to the last track yet.
A Wolf in the Kingdom of Heaven is without doubt the stand-out track, its like a steamroller to the legs, you cannot help but bang your head until it snaps off and eats you from the crotch up... yes it really is that brutal!

It's difficult to pigeon hole Aghast! they don't seem to care what genre of metal they stick in their songs, as long as it cracks a smile into your face and you remember that this is what metal USED to be about.

bands that come to mind are of course are PanterA and early Haunted with a healthy dose of Slipknot thrown in, but don't let that put you off. These guys take the 'good' bits from bands like Slipknot, e.g. the groove and the sheer auditory assault and really put them to work.

Overall, this is one not to be missed. Not only is it an AMAZING cd but these guys are such charismatic individuals that in time, they will be impossible to ignore.
