Cathedral are dead! All hail Lavagoat!

2011 may be seen as some as one of the saddest years in Doom Metal. Cathedral decided to call it quits and besides one final album to be released and one very last show in England, the band will be no more leaving its legacy to live on. Up there in the heavenly skies of Doom Metal, the gods may have had already planned this all along. While they were extinguishing the flame of the British legends, they were passing the spark onto Lavagoat to continue on the Great Works.

Most certainly drug/booze induced, the psychotropic revelation hit the Canadian band and pushed them to record under the(ir) influence and give birth to eponymous Lavagoat. Try to picture the early sound of Cathedral from Forest Of Equilibrium to The Ethereal Mirror taken to yet another level.

The symmetry of the album is actually refreshing. Opener and ending track give us something that pertain as much to The Ethereal Mirror than to Acrimony’s Tumuli Shroomaroom giving them a distinct and welcome Stoner Doom vibe. The core of the album is made up of The House and Rome which are more Doom Death Metal in essence with low-end growls (though Rome displays some catchy Heavy Metal riffing). The rest of the songs is pure Cathedral worship and for instance Magma is almost a mirror (haha!) picture of The Ethereal Mirror’s Midnight Mountain in composition, sound and even in Lavagoat’s singer sounding almost flawlessly (!) like Dorrian.

This may not be the most original albums released this year but for a starter it’s really impressive and the quality of both songs and production is top notch. Now considering that I have a few friends still crying all their body water over the loss of Cathedral, they’ll be pleased to know that the spirit that has died in some has flourished into others. Cathedral are dead! All hail Lavagoat!
