Biografia : Malediction (FRA-1)

Malediction are a progressive UK-based death metal band whose influences include CELTIC FROST, REPULSION, RUSH, early MORBID ANGEL, CARNAGE, NIHILIST, DEAD CAN DANCE, TERRORIZER, DEATH and CANDLEMASS.
Formed in Middlesbrough, Cleveland, UK in 1989, Malediction were one of the original bands in the first wave of the UK death metal movement. The band were the first of the new breed of English demo bands to reach vinyl with their System Fear EP on France's seminal THRASH RECORDS label in 1990.

Gigging solidly throughout the early 90s, and gaining substantial record company interest from the likes of PEACEVILLE, EARACHE, NUCLEAR BLAST, RELAPSE and NOISE amongst others, the band went on to release a string of demos, two further 7" EPs and in 1993 released a live MCD on GWB RECORDS entitled Chronicles of Dissension. Having notched up sales approaching 10,000 based on their underground reputation alone, the band signed with Norwegian label ARTIC SERENADES in 1996, after a number of attempts to finalise deals with other labels. The Millennium Cotillion, the band's full length studio debut, was recorded in 1996 but due to the collapse of the label, remains unreleased to this day. Shortly after the recording of the LP in late 1996, the band split.

Now based in Leeds, West Yorkshire, the band reformed in April 2000, and in June 2000 released a three-track promo-only demo CD entitled Shadows of Iniquity. Using unheard recordings from the 1994-1996 period, the Promo CD showcases three progressive death metal songs. The band's new material acknowledges their influences of old, but introduces atypical flourishes and textures to the death metal genre, clearly separating the band from the current crop of "new school" death metal acts and those still regurgitating the doom/death trends of the mid 1990s. The band aim to create memorable and inventive songs whilst remaining within the death metal genre.

After some recent line-up problems, the band is to return to Bradford's In-A-City studios to record a selection of songs from their current material for an MCD entitled The Return of the Prodigal for UK-based underground label, PARASITE RECORDS. Following the release of the MCD, the band intend to negotiate a long-term deal with a suitable label with a view to recording and releasing future Malediction material.

Editor's comment: In the early days the band went under the name Neurosis. After the demise of Parasite Records in early 2003 the band has been put on ice once again.
