Cradle of Filth's brilliantly concieved and perfectly executed LP "Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder" was one of the very best metal albums to come out in 2008. For a band that has long ago mastered the art of illustrating horrific scenes with their music, it is no wonder then how well they succeeded in their portrayal of the sadistic and evil Gilles de Rais as the subject on this dark concept album. The lyrics to this story are heavily enhanced from start to finish (indeed the album is bookended with organ instrumentals) with spoken word segments, heavy medieval organ lines ("Sweetest Maleficia"), Latin choir ("Honey and Sulfur"), creepy piano (the end of "Midnight Shadows Crawl to Darken Counsel With Life") and tolling bell ("Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder"), just to name a few. More importantly, the themes, speeds, and variations not only greatly compliment the lyrical imagery of each song (a skill songwriter Dani Filth has always done extremely well), but with the whole plot as well. The rising action of this tale is driven with a steady climb of aggression ("Honey and Sulphur"), purpose ("Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder") and flare (the ultra cool bass/rhythm movement on "Darkness Incarnate"). And yet, as complex and traditionally black Cradle of Filth is known to be, the songs that provide the most impact here are simple, straightforward, and even catchy. The two best examples, "Shat Out of Hell" and "The 13th Caesar", ring out like clear and concise power singles. The strongest part of "Tragic Kingdom" is a mere triplet. The best track, "The Death of Love", is so because it encompasses the very best that Cradle of Filth has to offer. It features a synth intro, spoken word, a great theme, background vocal harmonizer Sarah Jezebel Deva's best output, a catchy duo-style refrain featuring a second female vocalist, some impressive descending scale work, and great variations. "The Death of Love"; however, is the only true surprise. Excellent production and songwriting coupled with Gilles de Rais should make for a great black metal album. Cradle of Filth did, and "Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder" should go down as an awesome metal masterpiece.

This is yet another great concept album from Cradle of Filth. As always, Cradle picked out a very interesting topic.

This album follows the story of Gilles de Rais. De Rais was in the royal army and fought alongside Joan of Arc for his religious beliefs. De Rais quit the military around 1434 and retired to his house to spend the fortune he had inherited and earned for himself. After a couple years of living “high on the hog” de Rais ran out of money. It was then that he began to experiment with evil, thinking he would be able to build up his fortune by killing young children for the devil. Gilles de Rais did his evil doings in private until he stupidly kidnapped a clergyman. The kidnapping led to an investigation of de Rais’ home, where they found evidence of his evil. The exact number of killing is unknown because the evidence was taken care of, but is thought to be somewhere in the 600’s. The victims ranged from as young as 6 to as old as 18, and were of both sexes. Gilles de Rais and his accomplices were hanged.

After their not so great “Thornography” album, in 2008 Cradle of Filth released their new album “Godspeed on the Devil’s Thunder”. The album mixes modern and older styles of Cradle to make a perfect mix. There are many intense songs such as “The 13th Caesar” and “Tragic Kingdom,” and “Honey and Sulfur”. There is one very simply written duet named “The Death of Love,” where the line “where will you be my darling” is repeated over and over again. Doug Bradley, who has worked on previous COF albums and who stars in “Hellraiser” as Pinhead, does all of the spoken parts as Gilles de Rais. On one of the songs, Dani Filth’s daughter does the spoken introduction. GREAT ALBUM!!!!
