Carpe Noctem (ISL) (en)

The least we can say is that Alexander, singer of Carpe Noctem, is not very talkative. He gives very vague and general answers and it seems like he’s intentionally keeping a veil of mystery on In Terra Profugus, the last excellent opus that the band just released one month ago.
This behavior seems to lead us to discover this dark, deep and intense piece of work by ourselves. Natural laconism or commercial views? Anyway, this release is really worth the journey and it might possess your soul if you just open your mind to his dissonant and cursed tracks. Right, no talk anymore and let’s give the word to Alexander!

interview Carpe Noctem (ISL)1) Hi! First of all, can you please introduce the band to all readers who still don't know you? How did you start to play music and to create your band, and what are your expectations under the Carpe Noctem entity?
We are a black metal project based in Iceland. The formation of the band happened very organically, a process which culminated in the current lineup in 2009. Some of us have been playing together since 2005, however. We will continue to release material, as well as playing live. Whether we play outside of Iceland, remains to be seen at this point.

2) You come from Iceland, a little insular country where the metal scene is still not very famous over the world: and except bands like Solstafir and Svartidaudi, we don't know a lot about it! Could you please explain how the metal scene is in Iceland and tell us the interesting bands to follow?
NYIÞ is a very powerful musical project, both live and on their recordings. Other notable bands include Wormlust, Gone Postal, Plastic Gods.

3) In Terra Profugus has just been released and the least we can say is that it's a very compact and coherent piece of work, like a 52 minute long, black and morbid litany. Artwork, music, concept, lyrics, everything seems to be inextricably linked. Could you tell us more about this album and the different secrets it contains?
In Terra Profugus is a conceptual album about the descent into the void, transcendence through hardship and the subsequent transformation of the self. It is a dream-like narrative, a nightmare both real and profound.

I feel that overexplaining the meaning hidden within the album is really doing it a disservice.
interview Carpe Noctem (ISL)This is something that the listener has to experience for themselves, while they explore what the work has to offer. Everything in In Terra Profugus is a part of the concept, the music, art and lyrics all form one, coherent whole.

4) I was literally mesmerized by these long, heavy and discordant tracks, everything’s very dark, visual, almost cinematograhic and creates some horrific pictures in front of the listener's eyes. I really felt like I was witnessing some cursed lovecraftian rites by listening to In Terra Profugus. Are you really aware of this epic and cinematographic side of your music, something coming from a special process? If yes, how do you do to give birth to those nightmarish pictures? Can you tell us more about your compositions process?
All of us work together on creating the music, each perhaps more focused on his own section but still, it is very much a collaboration. We draw from many, very different influences when creating black metal, and are not necessarily limited to only black metal, or only music when doing so.

5) Your music flirts with the visual aspect, have you ever thought about shooting one film or some video clips to express, in another way, (maybe more concrete) the dark visions filling your souls?
Black metal can be very hard to visualize in a satisfying manner, in my opinion. We have thought about this but have no specific plans on doing it at the moment. It will have to depend on the project and collaborators if we would decide to pursue this.

6) We can notice all along these 52 minutes several influences such as Mayhem, Xasthur or Dolorian, but all mixed in a personal way, you manage t
interview Carpe Noctem (ISL)o create your own cursed and black art, definitely original and unique. What are your musical and extra musical influences?

As before, then we are a group of five, different individuals, not a single entity. Trying to explain or analyze each individual source of inspiration will not yield any noteworthy results or meaning regarding the creation process itself. We work within the black metal tradition, clearly, and as such draw upon various aspects of it as a whole, from its creation in the 80’s until today.

7) Is Carpe Noctem a live band too, do you foresee some live dates with the band? If yes, how do you intend to deliver such deep and possessing atmospheres on the stage?
We do play live shows, but we don’t foresee many live performances in the immediate future. We might play abroad next summer but that remains to be seen.

8) What were the different feedbacks about In Terra Profugus? Have you an idea about the themes and the form of the next album? Do we have to expect a logical sequel or, to the contrary, some changes regarding both form and content?
In Terra Profugus has generally received favorable reviews. This is great to see, but we try not to overly focus on that. Feedback and criticism is important, but it cannot be the primary focus when creating art.

9) What can we wish you with In Terra Profugus' release? Generally spoken, what are your projects and expectations for the future?

We are currently working on the next release, writing music and realizing the concept.

Thanks for your answers, I wish you all the best!
