Biografia : Saddam's Family

1: The beginning:
It was in the year of 1991, and dark clouds were hanging over Iraq. Saddam´s invasion of Kuwait had made the whole region stand on its toes. "The Scud", Baghdad-Bjork, Chemical Kim & Taha - Johan Ramadan, friends since early childhood, decided to flee the soon to become war-zone. Different routes led them through Europe, and finally they found their sanctuary in a little county called Sibbo in Finland. At the moment they couldn´t dream of playing in the same band. Although they all attended a music academy program in Baghdad, the war and the escape forced them to leave their precious hobby. And it was not until the autumn of 1997 that the music once again brought the old friends togheter.

2: Forming the Band:
In 1996 they all played in different bands, Taha - Johan Ramadan & Baghdad Bjork played in a band called Fiskkrematoriet, Chemical Kim and , and now former member of Saddam´s Family "Jew Couldwait" was in a band called Obvious Disaster. Johan "The Scud" Aziz played in his own band. When Fiskkrematoriet was put on hold, as Baghdad Bjork concentrated on a band called Growing Addiction, and Obvious Disaster split up, Taha - Johan Ramadan, Chemical Kim, Jew Couldwait & The Scud formed a band called Warghar. After one small gig the band changed its name to Saddam´s Family, and played the legendary "live at Träskberga" gig 14.03,1998, where the song "Harulf the Warulf", written a few months earlier by Jew & Ramadan had its premier. However, one year later, due to musical differencies, Jew & Chemical left the band, and the future of the band was left in the hands of The Scud and Ramadan. As the years went by, the two of them wrote the songs Burning the Flag & Desert War, but without a full band it seemed as if the songs never would be played in front of an audience, nevertheless be recorded. After the 9/11 terrorattack in N.Y the whole project was put on hold.

3: The new beginnig:
In the winter of 2002-03, as the US troops made threats to invade Iraq, Chemical Kim, The Scud and Johan Ramadan started to talk about reforming the band, as they all longed to be in the stagelight once again. When they heard that Baghdad Bjork had left his band, it all came clear, and the four of them started to record a demo version of Desert War, that in those days had a current topic. At the same time, the band was given the opportunity of recording a cover version of the song "we are the dogshitboys" to the album "Flashrock Academy - a tribute to the Dogshitboys". A year later Saddam´s Family was rehaersing new material for the studio session to record "Harulf the Warulf", "Desert War" and "we are the Dogshitboys". After finished work in the studio and the release of their EP, the band immediatelly started working on new material, with the next goal being a full length record. Another dream is of course to go on a tour in the bands old home country. And who knows what the future will bring...

3: The Name:
The name of the band, Saddam´s Family, invented by Ramadan after an intence brainstorming session, has brought up a lot of discussion. Can a band call itself Saddam's family in these days? The opinion of the band is - of course you can! Did not the Swedish group ABBA win the Eurovision song contest in 1974 with a song about the battle of Waterloo, where 40,000 people were killed or wounded? Of course, Saddam was a dictator, he did awful things and the land he ruled has lived under terror for many years. However, what could be better than to cure the trauma of millions of people by singing about it. All Saddam´s Family want´s is peace on earth and goodwill to all mankind.

4: Influences:
Although Heavy Metal music was banned in Iraq for many years, the members of Saddam´s Family listened to foreign radiostations introducing them to bands like Iron Maiden, WASP, Metallica, Pantera, Kiss, Manowar, Twisted Sister, Black Sabbath and so on. Coming to Finland gave the bandmembers the great freedom of going to live concerts of bands they always dreamed of seeing perform. Thanks to the hospitality of their new homeland, their dream of founding their own true Heavy Metal band, came true.

5: Harulf
"Harulf The Warulf" is what Eddie is for Iron Maiden. The idea of having a creature that is half rabbit half man was born in Ramadans head one very cold and rainy evening during easter 1997. The band already had a friend named Harry that they called Harulf, that soon became Harulf the Warulf (as a joke of course), and when Ramadan & The Jew started writing the song "Harulf the Warulf", the creature natrually became the mascot of the band.
