Biografia : Recursion (USA-1)

Recursion is a death metal band hailing from the Santa Cruz Mountains. Guitarist Matt Rosenberg and singer David Durante formed their first metal band in 2002 when they were only 13. Recursion’s members and material grew gradually from this initial project.

Despite constant changes to their band’s lineup, Matt and David continued to hone their skills from 2002 until 2004. That summer, Matt joined the legendary local death metal group Vornagar on bass and recorded with the group after only being in the group two weeks. Soon after, Vornagar’s guitarist, Greg Larrenaga joined Matt and David, playing 2nd guitar. The lineuup lineup then included Matt on lead guitar, Greg on 2nd guitar, Jacob Gallagher on bass, and Danny Quilici on drums.

The lineup stayed this way, actively writing and performing until Greg moved to Oregon in 2006 and Danny Quilici left the band. Despite the loss of band mates, Matt, Jacob, and David continued to refine their compositional and technical abilities, writing many new songs and revising old material to keep pace with their increasing abilities.

In early 2007, Jacob switched to drums and the three-piece changed their name to Abysmal Descent. Due to the extreme difficulty of their material, the group was unable to locate a bassist or guitarist who could keep up... far from discouraged, the trio continued to practice diligently and craft increasingly complex and sophisticated material, even playing a couple shows.

In the spring of 2007, the group recorded their demo entitled “Sacrifices to the Blood God” with Matt Sotelo of Decrepit Birth in Legion Studio. By the summer of 2008, the group settled on the name Recursion and had written another six songs. Under a tight schedule since Matt had to leave early for college on the East Coast, Recursion recorded their full-length “Transcendence in Impermanence” in only 10 days at Bear Studios with Jason Guthrie (Vornagar, Salo). This remarkably diverse album strives to tip its hat at many of the member's melodic and brutal death metal influences while simultaneously “transcending” narrow stylistic confines.

The album features remarkable musicianship, composition, and technicality: sweeps, melodic harmonies, brutal dissonances, blast beats, gravity and hyper blasts, classical counterpoint, cello, classical guitar, complex rhythmic and tempo changes all while maintaining a sense of groove.
