Intense grooves, heavy riffs and attitude from hell. Those are the foundations of Finnish groove-metal band Pickup. In Pickup's music you can easily hear influences from several bands who know how important a good groove can be without forgetting the ever-important heaviness. When talking about Pickup, one can easily come up with such comparisons as "Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society", "Entombed" and Anthrax. Mixing all these elements produces quite an unique blend of southern metal meets thrash meets death metal. The result is Pickup.
The band was formed back in the early spring of 2002 by the guitar players Mikko Lahtinen and Kimmo Kero. both guys had been playing around in different groups for over ten years, and when both realized that they were without a decent band in 2002, the guys sat down with a few cold ones and started to brew up an idea of a more groove-orientated band, and so the foundation of Pickup was established.
After the idea was born, it didn't take long for the guys to find the rest of the band. Niko Kaartinen had previously played with Kimmo and Lade in some of their projects, and the drummer was quickly asked to join Pickup. Also, finding a bass player was not a problem, since Antti Koverola, who also happens to play in Dead Revolution (a band which shares the rehearsal place with Pickup), had previously shown interest in playing groove-oriented music. So, Antti came aboard and the band was completely functional!
Coming up with material was not a problem for the band, since the creative force of Mikko and Kimmo were coming up with new ideas in every rehearsal. Some songs came from Mikko, some from Kimmo and most of the came by just jamming and having a great time! Soon the band had a a healthy bunch of songs ready, so it was only natural for Pickup to enter studio in september of 2003. The band laid down 4 tracks of groovy metal, and the results can be heard on this website. Now it's off to the gigs!
