Michael McCarthy, appelé Mike, a débuté comme producteur en 1984. Il possède son propre studio à Austin au Texas.
Producteur hétéroclite, il travailla avec des artistes américains aussi divers que la chanteuse folk Patty Griffin sur l'album Children Runnin Through (2007), mais il rencontra une certaine notoriété en produisant 4 albums du groupe d'Indie Pop, Spoon, d'abord Girls Can Tell (2001), puis Kill The Moonlight (2002), puis Gimme Fiction (2005) et enfin Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (2007) ; mais aussi et surtout en produisant le groupe de Prog/Noise Rock, And You Will Know Us By The Trail of the Dead (as Trail of Dead) dés l'album Madonna (1999), puis Source Tags and Codes (2002), puis The Secret of Elena's Tomb (2003), puis Worlds Apart (2005) et enfin So Divided (2006), époque où le groupe explosa sur la scène internationale.
